I am very sorry to read of Bridget's passing. We struck up a lovely friendship in the years after Bridget moved back to Ireland in 1998. At the time I worked in local radio in Carlow town and Bridget was a loyal listener. When our base moved to Naas in 2004 our friendship continued. Bridget often hired a taxi from Castledermot to bring her delicious cakes and homemade goodies for myself and other members of staff at our office in Naas.
We lost touch for a few years after I left radio in 2009. Being the determined woman she was, Bridget tracked me down through a letter in the post to a local newspaper where I wrote a weekly column. The Cards of Blessing for myself and my family from her pilgrimages to Knock again became a regular and much-appreciated feature of our friendship.
We had many conversations over the phone in more recent years. I learned a lot about Bridget's life. Her father, like my father, working on Kildare Co. Council. Winning a scholarship to attend secondary school in Carlow town and cycling to Carlow in all kinds of weather. I learned a lot about Bridget's love for her husband Tom, about the manner of his sudden passing in 1981, and how she found the strength to live with the loss in the years that followed. I learned how she eventually re-located to the North of England and how she made the decision to move back to Ireland.
I too shared many stories of my own life with Bridget. Indeed, Bridget was an immense source of strength to me following my own father's sudden passing in 2016 and my mother's death in September 2020. The last time we spoke on the phone was in April 2021. Bridget told me that she was moving the following day to Cork to be closer to her daughter Caroline. We promised to keep in touch. I tried her mobile number several times over the past two years but could not make contact.
I remembered from my conversations with Bridget that she knew a cousin of my father's who was a next door neighbour of one of Bridget's sisters in Maganey. I met my father's cousin last March and asked him if he knew Bridget and if she was still in Cork. I was delighted when he said he did indeed know Bridget and that she was still in good form. I tried the mobile one last time but alas our final phone conversation was not to be.
So Bridget, I hope you don't think this message is too long. You were a very special lady to all those who had the good fortune of knowing you and whose lives you touched. I'm very sorry to read today of your passing. I have no doubt, Bridget, that the light of Heaven will shine very brightly on your beautiful soul and that you are now reunited with your beloved Tom in the splendour of Heaven.
Say a prayer for us all Bridget and one final message: I hope that yourself and Tom mend the puncture on that bicycle together!
I may not be able to make it to Cork for Bridget's funeral but I wish to extend my sincere sympathy to Thomas, Caroline, Melisa, Ann-Marie, Mary and Christopher, Bridget's brothers and sisters and her extended family.
A very special lady. May the Lord comfort you all in your loss.
