Bruce Graham Hersey was a singularly creative music student in UCD in the Sixties, with a liking for discordant modern music (Bartók) that was shocking to some more traditional tastes. Among other compositions he wrote a haunting song cycle for voice and piano, "A Yellow Darkness", based on poems by Edna St Vincent Millay. It was one of the highlights of a festival of 20th century music held in Trinity. I heard it performed once, and never again. This happens all too often with musical works, which are timeless but fleeting (like the people who compose them). Bruce will live on in the memories of those who knew him.

I was a piano student of Bruce's. I lived as a lodger with Bruce for 7 years in the 1970s. We were very close (not gay) and shared so much together - music being a common interest. I knew his Mum quite well. Bruce was an eccentric irascible person to live with. Very opinionated and prescient. We had great affection for one another. Almost the Odd Couple. He was the Odd one of course. Go well my dear old friend. You never did get to finish that composition, but it sustained you in ways only those of us really close to you understood.

My sincere sympathy to all of Bruce's relatives and friends.
I am a close neighbour on Kincora Ave and have just watched the funeral online. It was a very moving celebration of his life. He would have loved the the music, and the kind words spoken by Fr Gerard, whom I heard him speak about many times.
May Bruce now rest peacefully and at ease.
