I knew Cathal from Scoil Mhuire, Marino. We were in 2nd class together, at least. Some of the other lads from our school reunion group will remember him too. I met Cathal again in the 1990s when he was playing a chess match in Phibsboro Chess Club (at the time based in Parnell Square) and I met him at a chess tournament in Drogheda (1998). He was a keen chess player, playing in a higher league than myself. We had lunch and a pint together then. I remember his energy, and his ready smile. Ar dheis Dé go raibh d'anam, a Chathal.

Its just lovely to read these messages from all parts of Cathals life. Cathal was part of my life since my childhood when he married my beloved aunt Bernie. We talked politics and history swapped books and yarns through all the years since. He was a beloved uncle to my children . He never forgot birthdays and had the sense of fun that appeals to all children. As recently as last autumn he took up learning banjo and my daughter who loved him since her baby hood had a go at teaching the man who taught us all so much.
He's at rest with Bernie and possibly a beer and a chess board close by. Light of heaven to them all. Blessings to Breda for being his pal and advocate.
