I would like to offer my sincere sympathy to the Gillen family on the passing of a dear husband and father Michael, affectionately known as "Chick". It has been an honour and a privilege for our family to have known him since we moved to Mervue many years ago.

He led a wonderful life and was a pillar of the community and city who gave unselfishly to so many aspects of Galway life as a barber, fireman, boxing trainer, Seapoint doorman, part-time farmer as well as being a great family man. His leadership among the youth was legendary and it was a proud moment for Galway and Ireland when his protege, Francis Barrett, led the Irish Olympic team in Atlanta in 1996.

His contribution to the community was immeasurable and his passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. To his wife Maureen , family Linda, Ann, Gloria, Michael, Patrick and Paddy I say thank you and "May Chick rest in peace and may his memory be a blessing"
