Hearing about Christy's sudden death was a shock to us. We offer our sincere condolences to Mary, Alan, and Brian, their spouses and the grandchildren.
We will always remember Christy's good humour, the archaeological walks with him around Turlough, him entertaining our visitors with his knowledge about Irish history, and - of course - our "adventure in Naas". Rest in peace.
— Ulrich and Ulla Wintersohl, Turlough and Leverkusen
It is with great sadness we have learned of Christy's death. He was a man from whom we learned so much and his warm smile always made him a pleasure to meet. His passing is a great loss to Mayo and not just to his family and all who who had the privilege to know him as a friend. His study and research leaves a valuable treasure into the future. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

It was with very great sadness that we learned of the death of our dear friend Christy Lawless. May he rest in peace and rise in glory. Sincere sympathy to Mary, Alan and Brian and the extended family.
Christy Lawless was a Christian gentleman ,loved and admired by all who knew him. He was a very talented and self-taught archaeologist, naturalist and environmentalist whose work was far superior to many of the professionals in these disciplines. He was also a superb photographer whose work thankfully will be available to generations to come. He contributed to local history and folklore too and there seemed to be no end to his talents.
He will be sadly missed and we shall not see his like again. Farewell dear friend until we all
meet again in Heaven.
— Des and Anne MacHale, Blackrock, Cork

So sorry to hear this morning (15 September) of the recent death of Christy Lawless. Our deepest sympathies to his wife Mary, and the extended family and friends. Christy was a fount of knowledge on the archaeology and natural history of his native county (Mayo) and especially the area about Castlebar. He was a widely acknowledged expert on fulachta fiadh, i.e. burnt mounds. He shared his knowledge through active participation in local and national societies, and especially the Mayo Historical and Archaeological Society, and the Irish Quaternary Association (IQUA). His contributions live on in the many articles he wrote on his discoveries that have been published in journals and local and regional newspapers over the years.
