Uncle Conal figured large in our childhood. Our father and he were very close, though Dad was the second eldest and Conal the youngest, of eleven. They supported each other in the farm work and shared resources.
As rain was threatening, Uncle Conal, striding purposefully down the hay field, was a welcome sight. Later, with his usual speed and energy, as the last of the field was whipped into shape, he would stick the hay fork decisively in the ground, say, over his shoulder “be seein ye”, and he was gone.
At other times, Uncle Conal and our Dad could be ensconced in what we secretly called ‘Dad’s office’, one of the warmer farm sheds, where everything from difficult decisions to the latest gossip was discussed.
Conal always took the positive view, tolerated no fuss or fluffiness, but cut to the chase of what needed to be done. His warm, generous spirit and easy laugh will be much missed by us all. May he now rest in peace.
