Deepest sympathy to Deirdre and all Damian's family and friends on your immeasurable loss. Damian (along with Deirdre) used to be my neighbours and you couldn't ask for better. RIP. 💐
— Joan Dockery
There were a few Damians I met while he was alive. I met the mature student Damian who was in his early 20s, when I was just 17, and he seemed impossibly streetwise. He sat up front with the "mature" mature students, i.e., the auld ones, but also bonded with us young 'uns between lectures. I knew Damian the secondary school teacher, whom I shared a house with in Stoneybatter for a couple of years. He was in his early 30s, when I was in my mid-20s. That Damian was there for me for the toughest breakup of my life and was clearsighted yet not patronising in helping me through it, helping me see that just because it hurt didn't mean it wasn't for the best. And there was the Damian I reconnected with in the past year, the Damian who was struggling with mental health issues, but who was incredibly open about them, and who was beaming throughout our two Skype conversations. He was still sage, insightful, and practical – he spotted my guitar in the background, saw that I had left the capo on its neck, and advised me to take better care of it by taking the capo off the guitar when not playing it – when really it should have been my turn to be offering advice and support. I never met the Damian who played football. I really wish I had. I could tell he was good even from the few times we knocked a ball about together in our small back garden. I never met Damian the kid or Damian the teenager or Damian the lawn bowler – though I really would have liked to have seen him in his full bowling outfit – but I wish I had. I wish I had known all the Damians.

My heartfelt condolences to Deirdre and all his family members and all his friends.

I miss you, Damian. I can't believe you're gone.
— Colm Hall

I got to know Damian through his work with my son Elka. He used his kindness, wisdom and empathy to connect with Elka and facilitated the most amazing turnaround in Elka's ability to learn, truly astounding. In the two years Damian taught Elka here in our home he was the one person I had contact with more than anyone else, bar Elka. Three times a week we would see each other during the last two years. I valued Damians opinion's about everything we discussed and like to think I was a good friend. We were all genuinely blessed to have had Damian in our lives and are heartbroken with his tragic passing. Deepest sympathy to Deirdre, Damians family and all of his friends. He was truly one of the originals.
