Deepest sympathy and condolences to Declan’s family and friends.
2014 I was unfortunately taken ill and admitted into ICU Basingstoke.
Declan was part of a great team that literally brought me back from near death and helped nurse me back to a position where I was able to leave the hospital a month later.
That 1st sip of soup you gave me, the over and beyond care and empathy you showed me in making me feel human again are things that I will never ever forget.
I was lucky enough to go back to the hospital a couple of years later as a visitor. Your dear colleagues Emilie and Louise were selling cakes to raise funds for “Parkinson’s”. Emilie took me up to see you and we had a photograph together. Big guy big smile I was so pleased to be able to thank you again for everything you did for me.
Eternally grateful Declan may you rest in peace x
— Ish Deedat

My deepest condolences to the entire Bracken family and to all of his family and friends.

Declan and I started work at Basingstoke ICU on the same day (10 years ago) and I was instantly drawn to his warmth, huge smile and massive personality. As I progressed through my nursing training he became my official mentor and friend. He was never afraid to ‘gently’ correct me, bringing about much reflection for us both, but his lessons made me the nurse I am now.

Not only was he an amazing teacher, he was a great confidant and would always have time for a chat and a laugh (especially if tea and chocolate/cake accompanied it!). During which he often talked about his family, particularly his children, his lifetime of travels and our shared fondness of chopping wood!

Declan was forever receiving positive messages, feedback and WOW award nomination’s from his patients, for his kind, funny personality and the compassionate care he gave. He really was very special.

Declan’s passing has left a huge hole in all of us at Basingstoke but he will never be forgotten by patients and staff alike. Sleep tight xx
— Emilie Cannons

Staff Nurse Bracken, we shared 10 years working together In Basingstoke ICU.
It was always a pleasure working with you, such a highly skilled ICU nurse who gave the highest standard of care.

You regularly received awards and feedback from patients and colleagues.
You have made a huge difference to so many people throughout your career, you nursed with kindness and compassion.

You mentored so many people with passion, you shared your experience and supported our team. You worked throughout the pandemic, your hard work and support will never be forgotten.

I loved that there was never dull moment on shift, you brought laughter, stories, and so many jokes.

Declan you will be missed more than you could ever have known, rest in peace my friend. X
