Uncle Denis was a very important part of our lives, and we loved him dearly. In our childhood he was like no other adult we ever came across – funny, mischievous, gentle and ever patient. Our summers with Uncle Denis, Brendan and our grandparents were very happy times – going with the donkey and cart to the creamery, riding in Uncle Denis’ ancient car (sometimes with a sheep on the back seat and always with bars of Cadbury’s Fruit and Nut on the front seat), sliding down the hayricks as they were built, watching Uncle Denis and Brendan dry off their feet in the oven. You never knew what he might do or say next. One day he spent all afternoon in the fields with us looking for frogs. We didn’t find any, but he did later – and woke us up late at night to drop the frog in our bed. He was unique - witty, original, kind. He always saw the best in people. He kept that gentle, generous spirit all his life, and he kept our love too. We carry it with us still.
Rest in peace, dear Uncle Denis.
Condolences to Mary, Gerard, Regina, Colm and Brendan.
