Derek was the key man in Crusaders in the 50s and 60s. One of the leading 800mtrs runners in Europe and (though his modesty was such that he wouldn't want that mentioned) a most friendly and encouraging colleague as we vainly tried to keep up with him in training. Happily a few of us from that period kept in touch with him for golf and lunches up to last year and we will miss him but always have him in mind.
My condolences to Pam and his sons.
— Tom Dunphy

Dear Pam, David and all your families,

Please accept my very sincerest condolences on youraa very sad loss of Derek.

It came to me as a great shock, as we were in the same class in school for so many years, and we kept up our friendship over the subsequent years..

We hadn't seen each other for some time as I lost contact with St. Andrews Alumni when I moved to the UK to be nearer my family

His loss will be keenly felt by all who knew him.

With very best wishes,

Quentin Crivon
