Derek George McCLEANE

Derek was the key man in Crusaders in the 50s and 60s. One of the leading 800mtrs runners in Europe and (though his modesty was such that he wouldn't want that mentioned) a most friendly and encouraging colleague as we vainly tried to keep up with him in training. Happily a few of us from that period kept in touch with him for golf and lunches up to last year and we will miss him but always have him in mind.

I remember what a great athlete Derek was in the 60’s. Described in a newspaper as “the lion hearted Derek McCleane”. That was him. I always admired him.

I competed with Derek in Crusaders A.C and trained with him at Churchhill Terrace in 1950/60's. We maintained a close friendship down the years and met from time to time with Derek and other Crusader friends .
