So sorry to have heard of Derek's passing.I have fond memories of him and Heather in TCP. He was,
understandably, so proud of TCP. What a fabulous legacy to have left behind. Thinking of all his friends and family at this time.

My sincere condolences, I was with Derek in Gonzaga, played (he played i attended) rugby with him and had some connection for a few years after but then lost touch. So sad at such a young age.

I was very sad to hear of Derek’s passing. I remember very fondly of our time together in the 90’s at the international matches with my Uncle Charlie. Always a friendly happy presence. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

I was very sad to learn Derek’s death after a long illness.
Derek was 3 years behind me at Gonzaga but he stood out at an early stage and was universally popular amongst all ages. Such a likeable young boy turned into a very decent man. Our paths didn’t cross much in adulthood, but when they did I felt the better for having met him. My condolences to Heather, Kealan and Aoife and also to his brothers John and Martin as well as his extended family.

Hard to believe its been a year since I met Derek and yourself in that new pub in Blackrock and had a few enjoyable beers. My friend Karen was delighted to meet you both and was struck by Derek's charm and humour - qualities he has had in abundance since I first met him in the mid 70s in Gonzaga. He was a great man and I am very sorry to see him taken so early.

My thoughts are with you and your children at this difficult time.

I was very fortunate to become included in a rugby fraternity a number of years ago, which Derek is an integral member of…. I was always impressed with his gentle demeanor, his enthusiasm but most of all his great sense of humor…. He was terrific fun to be in company with but always showed fellow feeling and true respect to everyone he came into contact with. Dear dear! The one and only original Zoltan(Aghast at the Wedding, 1978) has left us. The great beard, the wonderful cloak, and the two lines of proto-Russian. To quote the finale of 'Mine is the Kingdom' 1980, "Now we have lost our greatest leader, Zoltan has gone to his reward; now we have lost our greatest leader, Zoltan, our hero and our lord". Go well, old friend; you were a giant among giants.

Over the years when I met with Derek at rugby football occasions, I was always immensely impressed with his innate courtesy and informed thoughtful conversation.

The ambition and development of the Stillorgan – Rathfarnham RFC new facility was a source of enormous pride for him. He will be missed by so many in the rugby family.
