My heartfelt sympathies to Derek's wife, Liz, parent's Petra and Tony, sibling's Brian and Aoife. And his many close friends and colleagues. I had the pleasure to work with Derek over online meetings for cycling infrastructure. His genuine and up front approach was much appreciated. Derek was always kind and professional. He will be dearly missed.
Ar dheis dé a n-anam dílse.
— Roselyn Carroll, Galway City
Only today I found out that Derek had died on 22 October. I had messaged him prior to the FAI Cup Final, hoping to hook up for a pint before or after the match. Little did I know that he was already gone.

Derek was a lovely person, and someone who had a vision to improve the lives of others, through his work in the Department. He always had time for me and was keen to improve cycling infrastructure across Ireland. I'm just so sorry that he and his wife will not be able to cycle on the greenways that he was instrumental in funding.

Like everyone else on this thread, I will miss him.
— Rónán Gallagher

I was shocked to hear about Derek's passing and express my sincere sympathies and condolences to Liz and his family who must be feeling his loss greatly. Derek was someone you were always glad to see as he was a great colleague and always fun to work with. I knew him from our time in Finance and Revenue and worked with him more recently on greenways for two years in the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport where our time was filled with lots of non-work football and music chat. As a long suffering Man City fan, he was enjoying their success and no amount of baiting from Liverpool fans like myself was going to ruin that for him. He had a great sense of humour and he always seemed to just enjoy life. I will miss him.
— John Kelly
I’ve known Derek for 4 years while I was working in the department of transport and we grew a great friendship between him and I Over our love for football and music . I will miss him dearly and my condolences go out to his family .

— Gary Foran
I worked with Derek on greenways and the EuroVelo 1 cycle route in Ireland for the past 10 years. Derek was always so helpful and supportive of my work in this area. He always had a positive attitude and saw the good side of everything but was not afraid to express his beautifuly cynical view of certain things when it was deserved. Although I knew Derek primarily through work, I aways considered him as a friend. He always made you feel like a friend. I had the pleasure of sharing time with Derek outside of work too and that was always such fun. He will leave a gaping hole in my life so I cant imagine what it will be like for Liz, his family and his close friends. Condolences to all.
