Dermot HEHIR

Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, so loved, so missed, so very dear.

It is with great regret that I learned of the death of Professor Doctor Dermot Hehir.
I can't believe that he left us so quickly.
I had the honour of working with him in Tullamore Hospital 10 years ago.
When I left Tullamore I thanked him for all the support he gave me, but I will remain indebted to him for the rest of my life for the impact he had on my career.
Now that I have gone to Japan for a fellowship, I realised that I could not have arrived here without the very precious letter of recommendation that helped me get to Dublin and then to Frankfurt and then further along the long road of training in the career of a surgeon.

I wish to convey my sincere condolences to the grieving family whom I did not have the opportunity to meet although I was invited by Mr. Hehir to his house in Clara.

I thank him for everything he taught me and for the constant support he offered me.
I thank him for believing in me and supporting me with valuable advice for my career as a surgeon.
I thank him for his patience with me during the first weeks in Tullamore Hospital.
I will never forget you Mr Hehir.
I will remember you for the rest of my life for the kindness you have shown, kindness that not everyone could see.
Mr. Hehir, you were and will forever remain a model of professionalism in the career of a surgeon.

May you rest in peace in a better world. You left our world too soon!

Dermot was a wonderful man. First and foremost a devoted and proud father and family man, a treasured friend and colleague to many, and inspiration to those he taught, mentored and helped in his medical career. As Dermot would say "you gotta be rough if you wanna be tough". May his kind and gentle soul rest in eternal peace. We won't forget you.

Prof Hehir is a huge loss to the medical profession. My deepest sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues. I was fortunate enough that Prof Hehir fought my corner when I required surgery and am eternally grateful to him for saving me from further pain. His passion for his profession and excellent teaching skills ensured patients were listened to and received the care they deserved. I am truly sorry for his loss.

Mary, I’m so sorry to hear the sad news. I can remember as if it was yesterday, you heading off from Tralee, any chance you got - off up the road to meet Dermot - full of the joys, madly in love - the start of a wonderful journey.

Sincerest sympathies to Dermot's family. I knew him as a young man and as a student at UCG. He was a very nice, friendly neighbour in Corofin and I knew his whole family, especially his witty parents and brother Michael (RIP). It seems that he went on to a great life and career and so fulfilled the promise that he showed early on. Dermot was an advocate for improving the quality of hernia surgery and was the Irish representative on the board of the British Hernia Society. My sincere condolences to Dermot’s wife and family on the sad passing of Dermot .A brilliant surgeon who left nothing to chance.I am alive to day because of him.He saved my life 10 yrs ago when no one else would operate on me .I am so lucky I checked my self in tullamore that morning and he happened to be on duty .Spent 4 months in hospital under his care and he was such an easy doctor to talk to and straight to the point .He will be greatly missed.Rest in Peace Dermot
