I am so sad to hear of Diarmuid passing away. I had many and many a chat with him on the promenade in Bray. I learnt so much about history and Irish heritage from Diarmuid. I am so grateful that I knew Diarmuid. When I had my last child 25 years ago, Diarmuid helped me selecting her Irish name!! Bray and Ireland has lost an icon. Remembering Diarmuid in the fondest way possible. Rest in peace Diarmuid.

Dear Paddy, Catherine Teresa, it was with great sadness we learned of the passing of your beloved Dad, Diarmuid. For many years since 1982 each week in August in Co Clare at the Merriman Summer School brought gems of music, song, laughter, scholarship and pure fun and friendship. Meeting Diarmuid and his dearly missed friend Eoghan, and my dearly missed friend Margaret was always a highlight. Diarmuid welcomed this non-Gaeilgeoir, gently explaining and adding to the week's enjoyment and watching him dance was a joy to behold. My heartfelt sympathies to his family and to Maire and many thanks for their shared scholarship. Rest easy after your long and fruitful life
