My sincere sympathy to Diarmaid, Donnacha, Orla and Brian on the recent death of your father, Donal. I was so privileged to have had Donal as my teacher, he was gifted in so many ways. He introduced us to the wonders of algebra, geometry, Stair na hÉireann, The Wind in the Willows, poetry, music and, of course, his beloved Scéal Sheadhna. He promoted and encouraged us to be the best that we could be and his own modelling of the love of learning was truly inspirational.
On Monday last I had the privilege of playing a slow air on the box as his coffin was carried from the church in the Lough. I did so on behalf of the generations of Mon Boys who will be forever grateful that Mr. Hurley accompanied them on their journey. Rest in peace mo chara, tá do ghnó ďéanta agus déanta go maith agat. The Barrs and The Glen Abú.

To Diarmuid, Donnacha, Órla & Brian:

Sincerest condolences on the death of your father Dónal, and also on the recent passing of your mother Kitty which has only now come to our notice.
May God rest them both.

I had made up my mind to travel to the removal with the help of my family, but when the day came, I could not face the journey.
I had intended ringing him to congratulate him on The Barrs recent Munster Club success, a victory which would have brought him great pride.

I was very much looking forward to his next trip to Killarney, when he hoped to spend a few hours chatting here with me.

Our friendship began as two fresh-faced 14 year olds in Coláiste Íosagáin, and has continued to this day.
We had some great successes in football, culminating in the famous Érin’s Hope win of 1956, when I gave him the final pass that led him to score the goal of his life. It was this goal that won the Dublin County Championship for the Hope’s team that year, and sealed a famous victory that broke a 14-year run of St. Vincent’s dominance of the Dublin Championship.

Go nDéana Dia Trócaire ar anamacha Dhónail agus Kitty.

To Diarmuid, Donnacha, Órla & Brian.

We were very saddened to learn of your Dad’s recent passing, and also to hear the news that your dear Mum had also passed away some months ago unknownst to us.
Please accept our sincerest condolences, as well as my apologies for being unable to attend.
Your Dad was such a soft-spoken and gentle person, and became a lifelong friend of our Dad’s since their Coláiste Íosagáin days, which continued on during their tenure in St. Pat’s training college.
They had some wonderful times together, and created some great memories both off and on the field of play.
I know that Dad had the highest of regard for Dónal, and was very much looking forward to their next meet-up.

It is also wonderful to see so many glowing tributes paid by former pupils of your Dad’s in The North Mon.

Cobhrón díbh go léir ag an am seo.
You are all in our daily thoughts and prayers.

He was a good friend of my own father Frank, late of the North Mon secondary and a favourite cousin as well. He was always a welcome visitor to our house in Kilcrea Park. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
— Frank Buttimer
On behalf of North Monastery Primary staff and pupils a sincere thank you to Donal for the wonderful teaching life he shared with all of us in this community. Donal never really retired from the Mon and for years after he officially retired the summer holidays always began with a trip to meet Donal in MOKS. His teaching ability was legendry but he wore it lightly. The late Brendan Walsh Deputy Principal in the Mon and a former pupil of Donal proudly told me he was given teaching notes by Donal which he treasured for their excellence. Today Mr Hurley was remembered in The Mon and he will never be forgotten for we are living in the rich legacy he created.
— Carl O'Brien
