Cobhron. Someone who helped people think, even if they decided to think the opposite of his thoughts. He was an insider in Ireland who looked at the nation from the outside, and was hurt by its national abnormality. In other countries he was a curious outsider who thought his way into their inside nature. To think is to be human; to be human is to think. Slan leat smaointeoir.
— Garreth Byrne
My sympathies to his family. He was a man always interested in ideas, whether they corresponded to his own or not. A thinker with a wide range of interest.

Miriam and all The Fennell family. Dee and I are thinking of you at this sad time.
Desmond has gone but he has left us all with so many memories.
I clearly remember the day in 1969 that Desmond arrived, for the first time, in Glenelly. I was 15. I hadn't met anyone like him before. He could transport us to parts of the world that we had Scarcely heard of and bring it to life in our kitchen.
We will all recall conversations we had with him.
He would have been proud of the send off you gave him.
— John Carolan
Gach sólás ar chlann Fennell uile ag am an ghátair. Beannacht Dé ar Dheasún.
