I have lost a very dear friend and neighbour. Sadly missed.
— Marion
My deepest sympathy to the family of Dr. Charles Nelson. He will be a great loss to all who knew him and benefitted from his scholarship and publications. He brought the history of Irish plants and gardens to a wide and appreciative audience. May he walk with God, his angels and saints in the land of the living.
— Finola Reid
It is with great sadness that members of the Irish Garden Plant Society learned of the death of Dr Charles Nelson. From 1981 when he was the foundation chairman until his untimely death, Charles contributed enormously to our activities, notably about Irish garden plants. His book, A Heritage of Beauty, published by the IGPS in 2000 remains the standard reference book about Irish cultivated plants.
We extend our sympathies to his brothers and sisters at this time.
— Mary Forrest IGPS Chair
On behalf of the Trustees of the Worth Library, I am sending our deepest sympathies to Charles's family. A botanist and botanical writer of worldwide repute, the Trustees are extremely grateful for his extensive input and commitment as an author and editor to Botany and Gardens in Early Modern Ireland published by the Worth Trust in 2022.
— Emer Lawlor

We send our very sincere condolences to the family of Charles Nelson. As members of the former Heather Society we worked very closely with Charles and always admired his dedication to THS. His knowledge was immense of all botanical matters and the attention to detail was immaculate.
It is a very sad loss for the botanical world, but more importantly for your family.
We are sorry for your trouble.

Very sorry to learn of Charles' death. He was a loyal and committed member of the choir at St. Bartholomew's Church in Ballsbridge in the 1970s/80s where I was the organist & choirmaster. I have many of his beautiful, and meticulously researched, botanical books. May he rest in peace. My sincere sympathy to the family.

Deeply saddened today to read about Charles. When I began working in the Botanic Gardens in 1964 I found him a marvellous colleague and good friend. His office was next door to mine and students came in and out to discuss topics with him at will. So sad to hear of his sudden passing. He will be deeply missed by so many people all over the world. May he rest in peace. Seamus Conroy

Exactly a year ago I happened to email Charles with a query on the origins of Echium in Ireland. I was absolutely bowled over with his detailed and knowledgeable reply. A erudite and learned man. Rest in peace Charles.

Deeply shocked by Charles’s sudden death. All sympathy to his family. So much knowledge lost, when he might have had another decade of research and publishing. The Irish gardening world owes him a great debt: his books and other work live on.
