My sincere condolences on the passing of Michael , a true gentleman . I just read his obituary and final article on Napoleon in 'The Consultant' magazine.
I first met Michael as a medical student in Cork in the early 90s . I later had a pleasure of the company of Michael and Bernie as a fellow Medical Officer on the last Order of Malta Ireland pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1997 .
In recent years I have enjoyed his articles on medical history in 'The Consultant ' magazine and I bought his book in December 'Through the Pages of History ' a collection of his fascinating articles.
May his soul rest in Peace

So sorry to receive the news of Michael's passing. Although I only got to know him relatively recently and for a comparatively short length of time, I consider myself fortunate nevertheless. That was the effect that he had on a person – you always felt that you were in the presence of one whose life was well lived, which it was.

Deepest sympathies to all the family on the loss of Michael, a true renaissance man. From school days I remember his elegant and athletic diving, as his SHO in 1973 his knowledge and superb training were a great introduction to the standards required in modern medicine and later he was a supportive gastroenterology colleague. Only in latter years did I learn of his artistic talents. Through all the years the constants were his love for Bernie and the family and his kindness and respect to all.

When I received a call from Andrew, in California, to relay the sad news of the death of his Dad and my brother, I was numbed and stunned. I had been in repetitive communications, by e-mail with Michael, for many years, and two days before his totally unexpected death, I received a series of archival family photographs from him in which he was asking me to identify some unknown individuals in the photographs, so the news of his passing has been devastating for me. I have lost not only a beloved brother but a wonderful friend and confidant. I miss you dear Michael and until we meet in the next world may you rest in the peace you so richly deserve.

— Michelle Dorgan
I worked on Dr Whelton's team both as an intern and an SHO.
I remember him as a perfect gentleman, quietly do a great job, passing on his immense knowledge, and always showing respect for patients and staff, even the most junior of us. He never raised his voice nor showed anger or frustration when a junior made a mistake. He quietly discussed the mistakes with us. This was a gift as many juniors would be terrified of their seniors.
He was one of the consultants for whom I had the greatest respect.
A classmate informed me of the live streaming of his funeral mass. The service was beautiful and I felt privileged to have been able to join in.

My sincerest condolences to all his family and close friends who will miss him immensely but yet he leaves them with many great memories.

The words spoken at the service and the many things said in the condolences reveal someone who had a life full of love, well lived and thoroughly enjoyed to the utmost.

May be rest in peace.
