Dr. Peter James (Séamus) McGuinness

I was born next door to the McGuinness family in Coolaney and lived there for four years in the late 1940s. In 1993 our paths crossed again when Séamus was in charge of the MSc course in Educational Management which I took in Trinity. Fear fíor úsual, dedicated and hard-working. He demanded high standards and taught us to base opinions on valid research. I learned of his death while in Coolaney on a recent visit to Sligo. Deepest sympathy to his family.

Séamus lectured me for the M.Ed. over 40 years ago. Ours was his first class. He was a gentleman. I am so sorry to have learned about his death. So sorry to hear that Seamus has died. He was a tremendous support during my time doing the M.Ed. We last met in Skerries when he was visiting Eileen and he was always interested in his many past students' continued path and involvement in education.

As a former M.Ed student in Trinity in the early 80’s I remember Seamus as an insightful and diligent mentor and educator who gave generously of his time and knowledge with great good humour. My sincere sympathies to his family.

My sincerest sympathies to Seamus’s family on their sad loss. As a post graduate student in Trinity, Seamus was an immense influence on me and how I viewed my profession. He was a true educator, challenging all our preconceptions and insisting we move from our comfort zones. He had a great sense of humour and was a master of his craft. An educator to the tips of his fingers. I am fairly certain that I was Seamus's last MEd (TCD) thesis student before he retired. I remember him as a talented and gifted supervisor and there was no end to the amount of time he would give you. He saw it as his role to take you under his wing not to mollycoddle you but to believe in you and to develop your self-confidence. I remember the twinkle in his eye, the ashtray with the remains of what was not to be the last cigarette of the day and his little diary - you could not get out of his office without a date in the near future for the next piece of work! Sincere sympathy to his children who have lost their Mum and Dad in the same year.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Seamus’ passing. Seamus was an outstanding teacher and scholar, who gave generously of his time to students and to colleagues. He was passionate about education, and in particular, about equality of opportunity and access for all. It was wonderful to see him in action: a powerful orator and a wonderful communicator. As a junior colleague, I learned so much from him, and he always had time to listen to people and their concerns. His passing is a huge loss to education in this country, but his academic contribution will be remembered for many, many years to come, both in Ireland and much further afield where his work is still held in high regard. We remember him very fondly as a dedicated teacher in Trinity College on the MEd course and one of us, Aidan, later became a colleague in the School of Education, TCD.
