I have only just learned (19th January 2023) with very great sadness of the death of my friend Dr. Rex Dark. May he rest in peace and rise in glory. Sincere condolences to his brother Michael and his family.
Rex Dark was a Christian gentleman, one of the most brilliant mathematicians ever to work in Ireland, and loved and respected by his many students in Galway. He was generous to an unbelievable degree and exceedingly helpful to me mathematically since I first met him many years ago. Yet he was incredibly modest about his achievements and wore his learning very lightly.
Farewell dear Rex until we meet again in Heaven.

He was a wonderful asset to the mathematics department, to the College and to the community at large. Personally he was courteous and had a quiet sense of humour which I recall as always pleasant and timely. I offer my sincere condolences to Rex's brother Michael and his extended family, and also to the many who became his good friends. May he rest in peace.

Sad news that Rex has died, a fantastic lecturer, great communication skills and really made Maths sing. He could see things in a way that others could not and was a decent man who helped both the very able and less able students.
Ar dheis Dé agus Mhuire go raibh a anam uilig.
— Seán, 1990s graduate
My deepest condolences to Rex's family and friends on their sudden and sad loss. He was held in the highest esteem by all his colleagues in the Department of Mathematics, and indeed throughout the College. I have vivid memories of his first lecture to the 1st year class in October 1973. He was very helpful to junior colleagues and very generous with his time. Sad to think such a brilliant mathematical mind has ceased. Ave atque vale.
— James Ward
Where to start with Rex, an extraordinary person, and a sometime chorister many years ago. His contribution to church and community extended beyond city and county and travelled with him wherever he was, Galway, France and latterly Mayo. Sincere condolences to his family of whom he spoke so warmly.
— St Nicholas Collegiate Church Choir
Very sad news, condolences to Rex's family and friends. Rex was a kind and helpful colleague when I first arrived to work at NUIG in the nineties. I remember, even in my first year in Galway, being invited to a get together at his house in Moycullen. Even after his retirement, he came regularly to maths seminars in Aras De Brun. Thinking of this, and the many times I saw him cycling in to the University from Moycullen on his bike - I think the phrase "mens sana in corpore sano" is very apt. May he rest in peace.
— Michael Mc Gettrick
So sorry to hear of Rex's death. I (Michael) had offices in the same building: the one & only Áras de Brún. Always lovely to meet Rex. A scholar & a gentleman; mathematician, Francophile & more besides. Only heard good things about his lectures to generations of Maths students in UCG/NUIG. May be rest in peace. Shocked to read that Rex has died. Condolences to his family, friends and former colleagues in the Maths Dept, I met him on campus just a few weeks ago. I knew him from when I worked in the Botany Dept in the same building and he was an engaging and popular lecturer with first-year students in particular as he eased their transition to third-level studies. Friendly and at ease with everyone - from the Mountaineering Club, Meitheal an Rothar (his was the first folding bike I ever saw) and St Nick’s Choir - he was a complete gentleman.
— Clare Walsh, University of Galway
We were shocked and saddened to hear of Rex’s passing. He was a great friend of ours and a wonderful colleague of Arny’s. For 23 years, we were privileged to work, eat, travel, converse, and laugh with Rex. During the pandemic, Arny spoke with Rex on the phone every week or two, always on Monday at 3:00pm Westport time. We will miss his quiet humor, cheerful demeanor, and brilliant mind. Our condolences to his brother and family, who brought him great joy.
— Arny and Tracy Feldman, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA
I was an Engineering student in UCG in the early 1990’s and took Dr Dark’s maths class in 1st and 2nd year. In first year I thought he was teaching the “easy” part of the maths course. It was only in 2nd year when he taught a different part of the course that I realised he was just a brilliant lecturer who made it easy to understand the subject. He was so enthusiastic in class, always a joy to listen to him. At this stage I have forgotten a lot about my time in UCG but I haven’t forgotten him. Rest in peace Dr Rex. Condolences to his family.
— Former UCG Student
So sorry to learn that Rex has died. In NUIG he was respected as a true gentleman, knowledgeable, kind, courteous and considerate. Always clean-cut and impeccably attired, he rode daily on his bicycle twixt Moycullen and University in fair weather or foul – his great yellow rain-cape in the distance signalling his approach. Sincere sympathy to his brother Michael and extended family. May he rest in peace.
— Gerry Beggan, Bushypark, Galway

— Padraic O'Donoghue
So sorry to hear that Rex has died. Condolences to his brother and family. I met him only 6 weeks ago in Westport while out walking and he appeared hale and hearty. We worked closely together in St. Nicholas Collegiate Church in Galway where he was Treasurer for 6 years and I was Secretary of the Select Vestry. He was meticulous in everything that he did, always good humoured and more than willing to go the extra mile to make sure all was correct He also sang with the choir and was a member of the Lamplighters - a drama group with links to the parish. When he moved to Westport the familiar figure of him cycling his bike into the University in his yellow raincoat was missed by many in Moycullen. Rest in peace dear Rex.
— Ann Walton

What a clever man he was. Rex made mathematics look so easy. Who could forget his multiplication of massive matrices and the resulting simultaneous equations in the freezing cold H Block prefabs. RIP Dr Dark and thank you.
— Student in UCG 1990s
I offer my condolence to Michael and the extended family on the passing of Dr. Rex. I remember his calming presence as an invigilator in the Aula. May his gentle soul Rest In Peace.
