Dear Joan it is with sadness that I learn of the death of your beloved mother Betty, do mháthair mhuirneach. I remember fondly meeting your lovely parents, Betty and Joe, with you on a few occasions over the long years I have known you. I particularly cherish those memories because they were such warm, amiable and endearing company. Bhí an tsoineann i gclár a n-éadan: their serene and pleasant nature showed in their faces. I also recall how thoughtful and gracious they were in giving me a delightful vignette on my own native place The Burren, which you brought to me. And so it is that I feel deep sympathy for you and all the family who loved her at this time of sad farewells, this poignant point, this port of sorrows as homewards heavenwards sails her blessed soul.
