The officers and committee of Waterford Music were very sorry to hear of the passing of Eric, a long-time supporter. Eric was a member of Waterford Music and served on the committee for a number of years. We were honoured to have some of his works performed at our concerts and also privileged that he performed himself on a number of occasions. His music will live on. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sally and family at this sad time. May he rest in peace.

Dear Sally, Catherine, Rachel, Manus and all the family: I wish to extend my condolences on Eric’s passing. He was a powerful force for good in my life and the lives of countless others. Deepest sympathies

On behalf of all in the congregation of Christ Church Rathgar I would like to express our deepest condolences on the sad passing of Eric, after a rich and rewarding life for which we all give thanks. Eric was a highly talented and respected musician and universally popular with our Moderators and members alike. Eric will be remembered in thankful prayer in Christ Church Rathgar and we pray for peace and understanding to visit with his circle of family and friends.

Deeply saddened to hear of Eric's passing. A great loss to the music community, but his legacy as a composer and teacher will remain for future generations. I have enjoyed working with him, and working with his music - a true gentleman. Deepest sympathy to Sally and family.

Eric Sweeney made a wonderful contribution to Waterford, both academically and culturally. I was fortunate enough to be in Christ Church for his final official performance as cathedral organist and it was fantastic to see his talent and dedication so suitably honoured that special day. May he Rest In Peace.

Thank you Eric for all the wonderful music you introduced to the choirs I have been involved with over the years. It was always alright on the night. I still remember the gathering in St Margen in the Schwarzwald all those years ago. We will miss you.

Eric was my Leaving Cert music class teacher and my first composition mentor in the old Dublin College of Music, Chatham St. I always looked forward to our classes and he was so encouraging. I also know that he did so much for music in Waterford. I will miss having chats with him at the Aosdána Assembly in Dublin. A great musician and composer. May he rest in peace.

I was very saddened when told of Eric's death. A number of years ago I felt humbled and privileged to have been accepted by him as a member of Christ Church Choir which he directed so superbly. As a soloist, conductor or composer his wonderful musicianship was always apparent and appreciated by all who had contact with him. The Music World is so much diminished by his passing. To his wife Sally and family I extend my deepest sympathy.

I thought he would always be there. He was a gentle friend and lovey teacher. He saw me thorugh my first year TCD exams and it was featherweight teaching - everything made sense, nothing felt like work and we were longstanding friends and contemporaries. He made me enjoy organ music as I had not expected to and he had a loving integrity in his relationship with music.
The road between Dublin and Waterford seems very long now as I wish I had seen more of him after he moved there.
My heart is with Sally now. Catherine, Rachel and Manus are testament to their lpves and attachments - I know they will carry his spirit into the world.
I send you all more love than you can imagine.

Dear Sally, Rachel and all the Sweeney family, I was deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of your wonderful Eric. Eric was one of nature's true gentlemen that always believed in and encouraged everyone he came in contact with during an amazing professional musical career or in his voluntary charitable work that he carried out. Eric has left such a prolific cultural legacy to Waterford, Ireland and beyond that will greatly benefit future generations to come, just as Eric would wish. So very sorry for your loss. Eric was a great composer and educator who I had the pleasure of learning from at Waterford New Music Week. I played his music several times in his presence and as composing colleagues we shared a memorable concert in Prague some years ago. One of Ireland's most important composers and educators. Rest in Peace Eric.
