So sorry to hear of Fergus's death... I met him when he was chairing the Commission on the status of People with Disabilities... I referred to him as 'Judge' the first time we met, and he immediately told me not to stand on ceremony, and to call him Fergus...

He and his work on the Commission was my inspiration to become involved in activism... I was asked to attend public meetings of the Commission by the late Mervyn Taylor TD, and became active in the area of disability campaigning, advocacy, and equality as a result... He was such a lovely man... Quiet, kind, quick-witted and all around good fun to be around..

I learned an expression from him... We joked about what he would put in his eventual report on the commission...I asked that he do his very best for us all... He grinned and said with a mischievous glint in his eye "Well Carolyn, we must never, ever lie in these matters, but nobody has ever mentioned not guilding the lily a little"... Even now, almost thirty years later, I've never forgotten that, and I frequently use the phrase 'Guilding the lily' now...

He was a true gentleman in every sense, a truly gentle man... The world's supply of inspirational people has just got a bit smaller... May he rest in peace, and rise in glory...

Rest easy, Fergus...
