I was so sorry to learn of the death of Fr Connla. My deepest sympathy to his extended family and to the Jesuit Community.
He joined the Order the same year as my late brother Joe Shields. Some years ago, we had a great reunion in Aran when Joe was on holidays from Hong Kong, Fr. Connla met us in Dublin after Joe died in H.K. in 2005. When Connla was in Cherryfield, I had many a chat with him, as recently as 18th December last.

He officiated at my own and sister Frances's weddings in Carnlough. Never without a story or a song. Will remember his kindly presence. A one of a kind. Sympathy to all his/ourfamily circle.
Bhí an tAthair Connla Ó Dúbhshláine mar mhúinteoir Ghailge agus Fraincise againn i gColáiste Iognáid, Gaillimh ó 1968 go 1974. Bhuail mé leis in Árainn cúpla bhliain ó shoin agus lean ár gcómhrá arís in ainneoin na blianta idir an dá linn. Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh sé.

To Fr. Conla's family and fellow members of the Jesuit community in Ireland:
I still have vivid memories of an tAthair O Dubhslaine, who was our French teacher in the Jes when we were the Leaving Cert class of 1964/65. It is no exaggeration to say that he had us mesmerised with his readings from Harold Pinter - whose work he manifestly preferred to that of Moliere! During my first year at UCG (old nomenclature), I attended a Planxty concert in the Savoy cinema ( long gone ), and there standing beside me was an tAthair O Dubhslaine, dressed in a short, shiny black leather jacket! What was the world coming to??!! As a former Chairman ( old nomenclature) of the Federation of Irish Film Societies, I also wish to salute his contribution to film culture.
May he rest in peace.

I have fond memories of Fr. Connla in the mid 1960 when he was based in the Jes in Galway. I was involved in Coiste Iomána, a group set up by the then Uachtarán of the GAA, the late Alf Murray, "to bring back the hurling". I needed the loan of a 16mm Film Projector for some coaching I had organised. Someone pointed me in the direction of the Jes. I met Fr. Connla who was immediately enthusiastic about the project and he assured me that I could have the Projector any time I wanted. He purchased a bundle of hurls from me and, with the help of the late Br. Crowe, he promoted hurling in the Jes. Tá an-bhrón orm go bhfuil sé imithe ar shlí na fírinne. An-bhá aige leis an Gaeilge. Leaba i measc na n-Íosánach ar neamh go raibh aige agus gach sólás ag a mhuintir.
Fr. Connla was my mom (Peggy Price) first cousin. He was “one of a kind “ and will be remembered fondly for his kindness and down to earth way about him. ❤️
Is deacair cur síos ar an sagart ildánach seo i mbeagán focal: ar a dhílseacht dá Dhia, dá thír agus dá saíocht, dá Chumann Íosa , dá chairde iomadúla, agus go mór mór dá chuid siblíní idir bheo agus mharbh, ar thug sé gean dóibh go héag. Aireofar uainn é ach mairfidh cuimhne ar a chairdeas buan. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal agus go dtuga a ghradam nua i measc na naomh sólas dá ghaolta uile.
Deepest sympathy to Connla’s sisters and to the Jesuit community. We met Connla many times on Inis Mor when he visited our late brother, Fr Michael Mannion who he was so good and supportive to during his time on Cill Ronain. May Connla rest in peace

I had the pleasure of spending four years as PP of Aran and enjoyed Conla"s friendship and support during that time. A keen intellect and well read and well fraveled, he was always great company and very entertaining. I am sorry to be missing his funeral. He would have liked a good send off. Sincere sympathy to his family and his Jesuit colleagues.
Beannacht Dé le anam Connla. Is é a phós muid i 1999 agus bhí lá aoibhinn againn. Fear mór ealaíona, litríochta, ceoil agus siamsa. Ba mhór an onóir dúinn é aithne a bheith againn air. Comhbhrón ó chroí lena mhuintir, comhghleacaithe agus cairde ar fad. Go raibh leaba aige i measc na Naomh.
