David was a welcome visitor over many years in Oaktree Green. He accepted only a small glass of milk and we had many a pleasant chat.

Very saddened to hear of the passing of Father David, we always looked forward to his annual visit to our home He was a gentle and wise man and he was always interested in how our daughters were getting on in school. May he rest in peace.

We were sorry to hear of Fr. Gaffney's passing, we had some lovely chat with him when he visited our home in Oaktree, Castleknock. He earned his place in heaven may he rest in peace

I lived with David at Matero Parish for a short time in the late 1970s. A pleasant and peaceful companion. He learnt enough Nyanja to be able to visit many of the families in the parish. On foot, always on foot. His visits were gratefully remembered by individual families and commented on for many years. Deep sympathy to all his family.

Sincere condolences to Fr David’s family. Fr David was a great friend to the Parish of St Thomas the Apostle Laurel Lodge Castleknock over the past 30 years. Fr David will be greatly missed. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

He always edified me with his gentleness but also his tenacity in following the highest ideals of a Jesuit vocation. Gifted intellectually he placed his God-given talents at the service of ordinary people, both as a writer and as a "hands-on" visitor to their homes. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.

I would like to join the Gaffney family, the Jesuits in Ireland and David's friends as we mourn the death of Father David Gaffney SJ.
I have great memories of David during his time in Zambia. He had the extraordinary gift of visiting families in their homes. Day after day in Matero Parish, Lusaka he was known to go from door to door with no agenda except to visit families. Most Parish Priests are busy about all sorts of things except house visitation. I understand David did the same in Dublin for many years.
