I knew Fr. Joe Houston in Nanchang when teaching in a university there from 2007-2011. He encouraged all teachers of English associated with Aitece and others recruited by other means. He was a spiritual nurturer to a diversity of foreign teachers and foreign students from several lands. A learned man, he spoke to people he met on their own terms. Having mastered spoken Chinese, he communicated with citizens from various walks of life. He researched the death of a Columban missionary in the province in 1928 and was helped to locate his resting place. A nephew of the martyred priest was able to travel to China to witness the unveiling of a restored headstone. Joe Houston was liked by most people who met him in China. R.I.P.

I taught in China for three years with AITECE and Father Joe welcomed me and put me at ease in Hong Kong. He visited me in Chongqing several times in his role as Director of AITECE. Words fail me when I try to describe the goodness he radiated to everybody. May his generous, gentle soul rest with God. My condolences go to Father Joe’s family.
