Sincere sympathy to Fr Leo's family and to all his SMA confreres. My Mum Theresa was his first cousin and we very much enjoyed his gentle sense of humour and his visits over the years to Rathmullan, Armoy and Rathfarnham. The Silke reunion in 2009, his Diamond Jubilee Mass in Wilton and his 90th birthday party in Carrigaline are special memories. Requiescat in pace.

Sincere Condolences to Fr Leo Silke's family and those who loved him.
Fr Leo, my memory is of your warm smile, good sense of humour and kind spirit, when we met in Donegal, at your cousin, Fr. John J. Silke's funeral - your gentleness and kindness felt like an embrace. Please continue to be a guiding Angel over those who you have loved in life.
I like your words to Patricia;
"A Silke never says, Goodbye "...
May you Rest In Peace.
Thank you for your life's work on earth.

Sincere condolences to my sister's Family Silke (late of Artane,Dublin) and to the SMA Community on the sad parting of this gentle sport loving priest with the gentlest of souls and a brilliant intellect.
I was priviledged (as a 10 year old boy) to attend his ordination in the beautiful grounds
of Dromentine House, near Newry in 1952.
Fr. Leo was a frequent visitor and occasional lodger to our family home in Fairview, Dublin beside Croke Park, where my Dad and he were frequent attendees.
Fr. Leo never lost an oppurtunity to remind me of the time , that, while saying Mass in Fairvew he turned with a "Dominus vobiscum" only to find that his terrified solo server had done a runner.! (no half crown for me that day).
I was enthralled by his fascinating and insightful accounts of missionary life in Nigeria and his descriptions of life in Jos (after who my first dig was named) and of the tragic c.onflict between the Ibo and Hausa tribes.
I last met Fr. Leo two years ago on a vist to Cork with my niece Theresa Donnelly(nee Silke of Artane). On a brilliant Summer's day we sat outside a shop in Cobh licking cornettos and watching the sparkling waters of the harbour and sorting out the World's problems.!
Happy memories........
May his gentle soul rest in the eternal peace of the Lord.
— Sean Gaine
Sincere condolences to Fr Leo's family and the SMA community in Wilton. I lived with ye for a while around 2005 and 2008 while doing CPE in CUH. I struck up a great friendship with Leo during those years. Being a Tipp man we had a common interest... a game with a small ball, played on a large pitch. I often took Leo to a game during those years. Unfortunately Tipp suffered greatly at the hands of the Cats during many of those encounters... However bad the memories of those defeats are, they don't compare with the great memories and fun we had travelling to and from those games... Thanks for your gift of friendship Leo, and may you rest in peace.

Deepest sympathy to the relatives of Fr. Silke a true gentleman and friend. I will cherish the memories of your stays here at the B&B when you visited with your colleague Fr. Coltsman. I smile when i think of our chats and how you used to come into my kitchen after breakfast and sit, and i would work away clearing up. I got to to know so much about Borris and your family growing up there. How kind and supportive you were to me during a worrying time. May the Light of Heaven shine on you Fr. Leo and may you rest in eternal peace.
— Helen Doyle, Brandon View House B&B, St Mullins, Co Carlow
My deepest sympathy to the SMA fathers and to Fr.Leo’s brothers Desmond, Brendan, Donal, Vincent and Declan and their families. My aunt Mary Lennon often spoke of Fr. Leo having lived in Borris Post Office beside the Silke Family home. I was privileged to have Mrs Silke as my junior Primary teacher all those years ago. My mother RIP too counted the Silke family among her friends. Yesterday I was talking to a friend of mine who has a brother in SMA Cork about the three SMA priests who lived close to each other in the street of Borris. What a surprise I got when my brother phoned me to say that Fr. Leo had died. May he rest in peace.

To many he was known as Fr. Leo Silke, to us he was just "Uncle Leo."
The most wonderful man who devoted his life to countless others in times of great joy and sadness, his unquestionable faith and of course his family. A brave young man who ventured into an unknown world in 1952 armed with his bible, faith and in the belief his was being sent to Nigeria to do God's great work. He did this with love and joy for 33 years before returning to the UK to do more. Our lives have been greatly enriched by knowing you.
We will miss you dreadfully, but will always love you. Reunited with your loving parents and siblings may you rest in peace.
God be with you, love Geraldine, Andy, Keevagh & Nuria xxxx
