We knew him better by his ordained name of Fr. Marian. Way back in 1973 I was left in his care and that of Mr. Martin Nyahuye (the school's Boarding Master) and Sr. Louis Gardis. The three became de facto parents to me and my two siblings.

I remember well serving Catholic Mass on several occasions in particular the Mass at which Fr. Patrick Chakaipa was elevated to Archbishop. I witnessed a lot of frightening incidents during the Liberation Struggle. More than once the Rhodesian army came to the Mission to arrest Fr. Marian. One day an army helicopter landed on our school's football pitch and he and Brother Juniper hid in a small store room. He took a lot of risks as did the Irish doctors at the Mission Hospital who supplied medicine and tended to those injured and wounded in the struggle. The Catholic community played a very important role in educating and liberating the black Zimbabweans and that needs a lot of appreciation. We need the very same spirit and commitment in the present day Zimbabwe.

As for Father Marian, Mount St Mary's is your second name. R.I.P.

You have travelled the journey of life and your footprints are clearly marked on the sands of Mt St Mary's Mission's children. This is the end of the journey but the beginning of another deserved life in the heavens.
— Andrew Chiwenga
In memory of Paschal, the man who showed me what it means to universally love others unconditionally and how to live according to your values and convictions. He risked his life out of compassion and universal care of others, and he stood up against injustice and for human rights and the dignity of all. In memory of Fr. Marian, as a servant of God who lived the truth and love of the gospels, he worked tirelessly to lead others to the recognition that we are all one family. He invited me to stay at the mission to learn what a life of service in the love of God was all about. He taught me the importance of respect and honour for local traditions and individuality, ensuring that I could greet people appropriately in Shona as we made the rounds to the more remote outstations around Mashonaland. It was so natural that I was taken aback when visiting Marondera and a car pulled up along side where I was sitting on a curb eating an ice-pop and racist terms were said, and when I greeted people in Shona as I walked along the street and they smiled broadly and replied in kind. He taught me some of the history of the struggles for independence from his first-hand experiences, and helped me see the good in some of the very people who today seem to have forgotten their path and lost their way in terms of recognising all Zimbabweans as one family.

May he rest in the eternal peace of our Lord Jesus Christ and may his memory live on in the people he served so dedicatedly.
