Deepest sympathy to the family and extended relatives of Fr Pat. We were so so saddened to learn of his untimely passing. We were so sure he would be back to lead his flock in Caherlistrane & Corner Chapel. He was beyond compare. He saw us through some of our happiest and saddest times. His conversations were always so interesting. When he visited our mam in her late nineties, she so looked forward to his visits, they prayed, laughed, talked, he comforted her, they talked and prayed some more. He made a difference and he never judged. His likes will never be in it again. Thank you Fr Pat. You will be greatly missed. May your gentle soul be welcomed home in Heaven.
— Noel & Mary Kyne, Ballinduff, Corrandulla
Deepest condolences to the family of Fr Pat and his colleague Priests. It is with great sadness we learnt of the sad and very untimely passing of Fr Pat. His monthly visits to me were like a visit from from and old friend. He was so generous with his time. He had great interest in the books I read, especially various books on the history of Ireland. He was a wonderful conversationalist and I always felt enriched and informed after his visit and so looked forward to the next one. I will miss him greatly as will the whole community. May his gentle soul Rest in Peace

His poetry and reflections were poignant and full of soul, capturing the path taken from his early days in Claremorris to his years in Caherlistrane and Skehana and other places. He was an oasis of calm and serenity and was a true and genuine friend to many. Rest in peace, Pat.

My Uncle Jim, one of his parishioners in Skehana, always spoke very highly of him. When I was preparing an essay on his poetry during my time in UCG, Fr Pat was generous with his time, kind and interesting. God reward him for his tireless work and friendship to people. Sincerest sympathies to Martin and family, together with Anne, John, Finian and their families on the sad passing of our much loved Parish Priest Fr. Pat.
Fr Pat was not prepared to take the easy option in any thing. Every subject had to be thoroughly researched. Each well prepared sermon was a work of art with a questioning, conscience provoking Christian message in each one. His involvement with the Sacraments was not just an ecclesiastical box ticking exercise but an inclusive celebration for young and old.
His participation in the three School Boards of Management in the parish was always focussed on the protection and wellbeing of the child regardless of his/her background , colour, creed or race. He took great delight in the major building developments and improvements at each school.
His generosity and sense of justice were always to the fore!
His prowess with crosswords was well known “ I used to set them for the Irish Times” he confided at one stage! His annual parish quiz was a challenge and tested the sharpest minds on general knowledge and current affairs.
The annual day out at Fr. Pat's expense was eagerly anticipated by the Mass servers.
Fr. Pat’s love, kindness and spirit of generosity will be sorely missed by young and old in the parish and beyond.
Suaimhneas sioraí agus leaba i measc na naingeal duit Fr Pat!

Deepest sympathy to Anne, John, Martin and Finian on the sad loss of your brother Pat.
I have very fond memories of Pat during our time together in St. Jarlath’s. A great intellect, athlete and above all a great human being.
I recall vividly in the study hall in St. Jarlath’s, Pat updating his scrapbook after his diving expeditions in Enniscrone. I watched in awe as he attached all sorts of seaweeds to the pages of his diary and recorded all of the relevant background information in his flowing language and beautiful handwriting.
It was a pleasure meeting him from time to time over the years. Such a powerful advocate for the marginalised, I admired Pat so much for his persistence in promoting human rights at home and abroad.
Rest in peace Pat.

It was with great sadness that I learned of Fr. Pat's untimely passing. We wish to extend sincere condolences to his brothers, sister and wider family circle. I got to know Fr. Pat during his sojourn in Skehana. He was an inspiring, unassuming man with the common touch which put people at ease in his presence. He was possessed of a brilliant mind with a great love and passion for the arts, culture, literature, poetry, sports among other things. As a preacher he was captivating, with homilies that were always well crafted, thoughtful insightful and interesting. His loss is immense but the impact left on communities he served is enormous.
May Fr. Pat have a bed in Heaven to rest in eternal peace.

I will never forget the Sunday mornings, or Saturday evenings in Skehana mass. Eyes wide, ears and hearts pricked open, as we hung on every word you said. The fear of coughing in public was real then too, only because we might interrupt your homily. You inspired a generation Fr Pat. We will never forget you. Thank you for all you did for us. May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
— Marie Therese Connolly
Sincere sympathy to the O'Brien family, his friends and parishioners on the loss of Fr. Pat. Such a beautiful man and a humble priest and such a loss to the Diocese. I have strong connections with his parish and our paths crossed over the years in times of joy and sorrow. He was always there offering quite support and comfort. His regular visits (pre-Covid) to my uncle, Fr. Martin Newell were very moving and always characterised by gentleness and good humour. Fr. Pat, thank you for all you have done, rest in peace now "and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest".
