My condolences to all the members of Tom’s family at this sad time. I have the fondest memories of Tom during my year in Mount Oliver. I loved to listen to him play the piano in the dining room, sometimes he’d even sing too. Tom had a gift with words and was a great poet. He helped navigate us through biblical significant story and also through the Mourne mountains. I still love to walk in the Mournes, thanks to Tom. So next time I’m up by the Mourne wall I promise I’ll remember to keep you all in my prayers.

My sincere sympathy to all Toms family and close friends. I have very happy and supportive memories of my year with him in Mth Oliver, 1989 -90 and our subsequent reunions. He helped transform my vision and retune my life again in preparation for life and roles that followed. Could never have coped without the year and all we explored. Thanks for the lovely hill walks,
RIP Tom.

Sincere sympathy to the Hamill family on their great loss. Tom was a gifted educator and teacher. An inspiration and challenger with a wicked sense of humour. He loved Charley Brown and often incorporated his quotes on the pages he handed out. His command and in-depth take on the scriptures was awesome as he said Mass on the Cooley Mountains even in the depth of Winter snow. He quoted "Lord that we may not have to travel in Winter" in the blinding whiteness. Thank you Tom for sharing your gifts and giving us an insight into the "Otherness" Ní bheidh a leíthéid ann arís. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.

As a junior student in St. Patrick's College, Armagh, I was filled with awe and admiration for Tom who was a senior student there then. My view of him never changed, Dia go deo leis.

Tom gave me meticulous help with a quotation from Homer about the island of Rhodes. I had to give a speech in Rhodes in the 1990's about disability and tourism. With Tom's assistance, I can truly claim to have taught Homer to the Greeks. Anyway the speech went well and one enthusiastic woman in the audience was able to read the quotation Tom gave me and translate it into English

Tom would pull God out of a rock,
or a pattern of leaf, or the inflection of voice
Or a piece of smelly cheese he loved to bait with,
He poured wine TIL it overflowed

He was the Buddha too in deep compassion
And was as happy with shepherd talk
As with the bishops of bewildered theology
A pilgrim among pilgrims

He moved me in bearded twinkle
From boy to man, from renegade to reverence
He walked me into dreams
And solace for restless spirit

He was the stuff that saints are made of
Though he always pointed beyond.
— Kieran Vivian-Byrne (MO 1985/86)

My sympathy, both personally and on behalf of Lough Derg, to the Hamill Family on Tom's death.
Through his friendship with Fr Richard Mohan he came to be a great friend and advocate for Lough Derg , and a regular pilgrim here too. I have a particular memory of Tom, in his signature woolly cap, narrating one of the first - possibly even the first - television documentary on the Island and the Pilgrimage.
May he live forever in light, after all his jousting with the darkness and the delight he took in accompanying and cajoling others through the darkness and towards the light.
— Fr La Flynn

My condolences to all the Hamill family. Tom came to help the late Fr Tony Lambe and myself in Keady many moons ago. Tony was anxious to welcome Tom and invited us into his room where a bottle of Jameson sat on the table. "Would you like a little driddle?" Tony asked. Tom replied "I prefer the bottle in front of me to the frontal lobotomy." We never looked back after that. May he rest in peace.
