Gerald Dawe

I have just heard the news of Gerry’s passing and I’m deeply saddened. Gerry was my supervisor at Oscar Wilde Centre in 2005-2006. He was very good to me. Very encouraging and supportive of my poems. I will always remember him fondly. What a kind and inspiring man. Thank you for everything Gerry. God bless you.

Sincere sympathy to Gerard's family, friends and colleagues. I was priviliged to have him as my English tutor, in U.C.G. in the last 1970s. He made a huge impression on me and his tutorials were always enlightening and challenging of participants, yet supportive and positive. One was certainly not allowed to get away without participating! May his noble soul rest in peace.

We are deeply saddened to learn of Gerry’s death and we regret that we are unable to join you in celebrating his life.
Our encounters, in recent years have been brief but memorable times in Abbeygate Street and UCG will not be forgotten. Nor will Gerry’s spirit.

Incredibly sad news. Gerry was a wonderful teacher & poet. I was blessed to have known him and to have had him as my teacher at TCD. I will never forget his encouragement and enthusiasm. Many condolences here to his family on such a huge loss. Rest In Peace, Gerald.

My deepest sympathy to Dorothea, Olwen and Iarla on the sad, sad death of Gerry. A wonderful poet, yes, and a wonderful Irishman too. That great East Belfast voice brought us so many fine stories and his writing brought us so many memories of the best of us. I particularly remember his recall of Charlie Donnelly, another fine Ulster man and member of the International Brigade, who fought and died for the Spanish Republic. Gerry's voice will be sorely missed.

Dear Dorothea , Olwen, Iarla and family. Our deepest condolences on the death of Gerry. We will remember him for his kindness all those years ago when his friend, our beloved sister Anne, was tragically killed in a car accident. He wrote a beautiful poem in her memory and remained a support to the family for many years to follow. It was always uplifting to hear his Belfast tones on the radio. May you get comfort from the knowledge that his huge body of work and his generosity to others will inspire generations to come. May he rest in peace.

We were deeply saddened to hear that the world had lost someone who still had so much to give, to friends and colleagues and, of course most of all, to those close to him. We hope that some comfort will be drawn from the fact that affection once given never goes away. What is good in a person does not vanish with them; it stays in the world, at least for as long as their memory is kept alive. In Gerald's case, countless contributions to this will be made and continue well into the future.

Dorothea, we are two old friends of Gerry’s who were trying recently to reconnect with him after more than 50 years. We all did A levels together in Belfast at age 18/19 and afterwards went our separate ways. In that one year Gerry made such a lasting impression on us in so many ways and was delighted when we got in touch. His emails were so kind, positive and hopeful that we would meet up. He told us he was unwell but he must have been pretty ill at that point….his last email was on April 5th. We are devastated at your loss, sorry we did not get to meet but so glad we made the effort. Deepest condolences to you, Olwen and Iarla and to Pamela whom Joan remembers.
