I was very sorry to hear about Gerdie. He was a true gentleman. He supplied our club in London with trophies. He was very friendly and always had a funny story to tell.

Sincere sympathy to Vincent and all the family from Ballydonoghue GAA, many a time we had the pleasure of his company at our club grounds in Coolard. He will be sadly missed. Always a great connection with our club through the great way that iconic sports shop supported the foundations and revival of Cumann na mBunscoil Ciarrai with their sponsorship and support of Maurice O Mahony our club man who with the support of Paddy Keane, Tom Roche, Jackie Walsh etc, got them competitions going again in 1994. Many a Kerry player have come through them ranks. Gerard would be proud of that, May he rest in peace.

My sincere sympathies to Vincent, Joan and all of Gerdie’s family. I have such fond memories of Gerdie – be that involving the Desmonds, the Christmas Blitz or times down at the shop. Many times, over the years – when asked where I was from and saying “Castleisland” – the response back would be “do you know Gerdie Murphy?”. Each time - there would be a warm smile and a funny story to be shared on each side and all would be the better for it. Castleisland and the wider world has lost a great character. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.
