Hello Mia, Donnacha, and Etain.
I Wish to express sincere condolences on the loss of your wonderful Gerheardt.
Really enjoyed his company and companionship at Black Church Studio.
So many fond memories of our conversations together over some fine wine. We had lively and amusing exchanges relating to nature, forestry and the arts. He harboured such a fountain of knowledge on issues relating to the environment and the arts. We have all benefitted from his
wonderful contributions towards a better, greener and holistic Ireland.
The funeral mass was such a fitting
celebration of the wonderful fulsome
life he lived. Forever in my thoughts. Rest in Peace. V🌲🌲🌲🍁

I was very saddened on Friday last, to hear of Gerhardt's death. I got to know Gerhardt over the last 10 years or so through the Society. He was an ever present at events that we organised including seminars, regional field days, international study tours and national conferences. It was always great to see him make the effort to attend and contribute.
Gerhardt always had an interesting viewpoint on topical issues, with recommended solutions. His legacy will be remembered within the Society and industry as a whole, combined with his scientific workings. On top of all of this, he was a gentleman and a great character and I will miss him. May he rest in peace.
— Hugh Cawley, Society of Irish Foresters

Sincere sympathy to the Gallagher family on the passing of Gerhardt. Your loss is great at this time, but I want to let you know that it is also deeply felt throughout the forestry family where Gerhardt's wise counsel and good humour were truly appreciated.

Even as he entered his 89th year in March, he was still writing for the Farmers Journal and Irish Times with the energy of a man half his age. Members of the Society of Irish Foresters fondly recall his contributions to study tours as in Austria, 2016, where the country's researchers marvelled at his knowledge in a spruce forest established in 1969 as part of a European-wide research trial. Gerhardt, deeply aware of his East German lineage, ensured that this project would include countries behind the then Iron Curtain.

Gerhardt extolled all the benefits of forests including the economic and ecological in a letter to the Irish Times in 2018 after his usual weekend forest walk:

At all levels there is a rich diversity of vegetation. Mature broadleaves, conifers and mixed woodlands – oak, beech and birch, pine, fir, larch and spruce – dominate the canopy….The ground is profuse with fern, sedges, briar, bracken, grasses, mosses and smaller plants, and home to small animals and birds. A pair of ravens patrol the sky...

This extract sums up Gerhardt's love of the forest and why he is such an enormous loss, but it is also serves as an inspiration to face the future with renewed hope and confidence.

Rest easy Gerhardt.

Gerhardt Gallagher was one of the most outstanding men I’ve met. He lectured me in UCD in my formative years. His knowledge and enthusiasm to pass on knowledge was exceptional. At any conference or meeting Gerhardt always had a word and was always willing to learn more about forestry. Even though his knowledge was immense. Most definitely a visionary. A brilliant man.

His professionalism, work ethic, enthusiasm and a willingness to share his knowledge and wisdom to ensure determination of optimum decision - making. I have fond memories of visiting an exhibition of his paintings in a major Grafton Street store (Brown Thomas) at lunchtime many years ago. There is a sean-fhocal in Irish which succinctly encapsulates Gerhard's truly remarkable talents and ability - 'Ní bhfeicimíd a leithéid arís', which translated means 'we won't see the likes of him again'.
