I would like to to say how sad I was to hear of Gerry's passing. I only knew him through the website Chessgames.com, where he was greatly liked and respected. Over the twelve years that Gerry was a member of the site he made many friends. His passion for and knowledge of the game of chess was impressive. But it was his sparkling intelligence and peerless mastery of the written word that drew so many of us to him. Truly a beautiful mind. My sympathies and condolences to his family and friends.

Very sorry to hear of Gerry's passing. I knew him when we both worked for IN DUBLIN magazine. He was always very helpful and gave me advice on how to get on mailing list for film screenings.

I was always very fond and slightly in awe of Gerry, he was very kind, amazingly clever and articulate. I am shocked and stunned by his early passing and that of his brother dear Barry also..Sending my sincere condolences to Flor, Claire and Dan and the extended family. I wish you strength and peace at this difficult time. Lots of Love, Valerie.

Really sorry to hear this sad news today. Our paths first crossed at school in the 1970s and then we met again 30 years later when we were both freelancing for the Culture section of The Sunday Times under Michael Ross. Gerry was clever, curious, kind and quiet - a lovely combination of traits in any personality. He was also the writer, among all of my colleagues, that I admired the most. Without a doubt.

A thorough gentleman whom I met at chess events in Munster over recent years. A great loss to his CCYMS team colleagues.
Passing on my condolences to all his family and friends.
