It is with great sadness that I have just heard of Ray's passing earlier this month. I would like to express my deepest sympathy to all of the Bates family. My thoughts are with Natasha and with Rays youngest brother, Richard in particular. Ray was such a gentleman. A tower of scientific strength, always interesting, in a gentle, kind and thoughtful way. He will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.

Ta brón orm cloisint fé bhás Ray. Is cuimhin liom é in Rosslare Met Office when I trained there as a Met Assistant June - October, 1964. I was aware of his career path since then.
Even though I left the met service shortly after I always had an interest in weather matters, cloud formations (ever changing) especially and their Latin names.
Remembering also Brendan McWilliams and Tony Hollingsworth.
Deinim comhbhrón le Natasha, clann, gaolta & cáirde uile Ray.

— Kieran Grace, Dublin and Wexford
Very sorry to learn of Ray's death. I knew him at St. Peter's College, Wexford 1956-58 where, as a teenager, he was already recognised as both a gentleman and a scholar. Though not a social scientist to challenge the turbulent storms and clockwork orange monoculture of SPC in the 1950s, we had high expectations, because of his academic excellence, that his meteorological ambitions might somehow heal the inclement Irish weather! Alas! Delighted to see that he transcended his Wexford background and that his intellectual brilliance and scientific endeavours took him beyond limiting Hibernian boundaries, and allowed him to fly above the clouds, establish an international presence, and address major climate change issues.
Sincerest condolences to all the Bates family.
— Michael Kehoe, Spartanburg SC

It was with the greatest sorrow and sadness that I, Martin and my wife Mei received the sad news yesterday of the passing of our dear friend Dr. Ray Bates (R.I.P.). When I first arrived in the United States (Dec 27th, 1967) to embark on a postdoctoral research fellowship, I met Ray socially shortly thereafter. At that time he was finishing his Ph.D. Research at MIT. Our mutual love for our native land, science and music solidified our friendship. With Ray we socialized many times and I met many of his friends. Whenever my wife and I visited Ireland we invariably met socially and especially for the Wexford Festival Opera. And we also met during our scientific travels especially in Washington, Geneva, Copenhagen or St. Petersburg. We are deeply grieved and we offer our sincere condolences to the Bates family of Kilmore Quay and to his lovely and supportive wife Natasha who was also most helpful to me when I was carrying out research in Russia.
May God grand Ray perpetual peace and may his soul be among all those of the faithful departed and rest in God’s care for all eternity.
Sincerely,
Martin and Mei Carey

I was very sad when Ray died after a short illness. My deepest condolences to his wife Natasha and to all his siblings, wider family and friends. A world renowned scientist in meteorology & climate he had the great ability to explain complex issues in simple terms. Good examples were the ICSF Zoom lecture he gave on methane in 2020 and the interview he gave to GRIPT on CO2, in 2021. Suaimhneas síoraí dó.

I will cherish our monthly lunches over the past 10 years where we discussed all things scientific (and non scientific). A privilege to have known such a great mind. What a gentle man, his caring and thoughtful manner belied his huge intellect, devoid of ego. Ireland and the world has lost one of its greatest atmospheric physisists. I shall miss you Ray.
