Dear Freda, Barbara, and Sean,

One of the last times I saw Uncle Jack, he spent some of it recalling his solo trip to Rome (70 something years earlier) and reminiscing with my dad about their trip to Aachen in the fifties. It was so amazing to me that after all those years, although the memories had obviously faded, he could still tap into the excitement and wonder those trips had brought him as if they were yesterday. Jack was a lovely man who truly did have the gift of the gab which he used frequently to recount stories of his beloved kids and grandkids.

Thinking of you all during this sad and difficult time. May he rest in peace.

Dear Barbara, Seán and Freda,

Sincere condolences on the sad passing of your beloved dad Jack. What a vibrant, kind, intelligent and interesting man he was.
I remember him with huge affection and the way his storytelling about the characters and funny events from Dundalk would have the tears of laughter running down my mum and dad's face when we visited. Your home was always so welcoming.
During these difficult weeks and months ahead as you grieve your dad's passing, we will continue to pray for you, that God may comfort you. May he rest in peace.

Jack was a complete embodiment of the phrase "a gentleman and a scholar". A great neighbour who was a bundle of busy energy, striding out purposefully every day "down town" (even when his eyesight let him down) and an enormous font of local knowledge. He could talk for Ireland! I was lucky to get to know him better while working on Voices of Dundalk, which was a great pleasure. I remember the huge turnout in the Fairways Hotel for the launch, and his beaming pride when Ann spoke to introduce him. May he be happy to meet both her and Mary in Heaven now. It's very true to say that "ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís". My thoughts are with Freda, Barbara, Seán and Jack's extended family at this difficult time.

Dear Freda, Barbara and Sean,
I am so sad to hear of your Dad's passing. Jack was a wonderful man; pleasant, kind, extremely knowledgeable (about everything it seemed) and very funny. I have great memories of him regaling me with stories of the railway, the 'smithy' and all the great characters he knew down through the years. I bought the books, but, in truth, I'd already had the pleasure of hearing all the details first hand.

He is now with his beloved Mary, and your beautiful sister Anne. God rest his kind and gentle soul.

My sincere condolences.

Deepest Sympathy to the McQuillan family on the passing of Jack He will be missed by everyone who know him for his lovely smile and courteous manner. May his gentle Soul Rest in Peace
— Marie McArdle Thomas Street
Jack was a lovely, lovely man. When I first started working in The Argus, Jack wrote obituaries, long hand. It wasn't today or yesterday. However when we first introduced computers to the newsroom, Jack fully embraced the new technology, although I'm sure it must have been frustrating for him and probably took him longer to write his obituaries.
For years, myself and Francis Carroll shared an office with Jack who who come in and out of the office when he needed to work, doing a few hours here and there during the course of the week.
As young men, we would be looking forward to the weekend, going out on the town and as we slumped on Friday afternoons our attention would turn to the weekend and what plans we had. Jack would listen and say nothing, but I often wondered what he must have thought of the pair of us and our ramblings.
He was a fountain of knowledge on local history, a key asset in a local newspaper.
His book 'Voices of Dundalk' was something to be very, very proud of and the launch night in the Fairways Hotel was packed to the gills with townspeople. In his usual quiet, dignifed and unassuming way he was bursting with pride at his achievement and quiet rightly so.
Truly he was just a lovely, lovely gentleman.
May he rest in peace.
— John Mulligan, The Argus

Dear Freda, Barbara & Seán,
My sincere condolences on Uncle Jack's passing. I have a lovely and vivid memory of spending time with Uncle Jack a few years ago, a brief tea in your house after we met accidentally getting off the train in Dundalk.
From that day I have a clear picture of Uncle Jack's smile, as infectious, warm and welcoming and eyes that were inquisitive as they were experienced.
To Dad and Uncle Don, hold on to 85+ years of Uncle Jack's laughter and stories and he will always be close by.
