Just after hearing the sad news of the passing of Jim. He was very much a central player in the community life of Abbeyleix during my five years in the town in the late 1970s. He was closely associated with the Abbeyleix Song Contest and was compere for those special shows that attracted capacity crowds to the Macra Hall. Jim had a gentle and serene quality about him and a special sense of humour too. I met him occasionally over the years and it was so easy to reconnect and share memories from those days. He was very proud of his Leitrim roots and we had a kind of natural affinity through our fondness for the West. Jim made a great contribution to the life of Abbeyleix and Laois and will be remembered with fond regard by so many people. My condolences to Germaine and the family at this time.

I am only hearing late of the recent passing of Jim. I know only of Jim in his capacity as County Registrar during my time working in Portlaoise. Jim had an excellent legal mind, always clear and fair in his decisions taking all circumstances into account. Jim was a great mentor to all new practitioners to the legal profession and courteous and helpful to everyone involved. A true gentleman for sure. May he rest in peace.

He was a lovely man with a great sense of humour which he often expressed in his District Court practice days to great effect and carried forward to his time as County Registrar. May he rest in peace.
