It is with great sadness to learn of the passing of Jimmy Blackweir, and I offer my sincere and deepest sympathy to Jimmy’s immediate family, nieces and nephews and extend our condolences to the extended Blackweir families at home and abroad at this time. Jimmy was forever a gentleman and alway’s a pleasure to “meet and greet” over a lifetime living in Athlone. Remembering Jimmy as part of the great Connaught side communities of Athlone, who worked and travelled throughout the town on foot with great dignity, and while difficult at times, he journeyed without negative comment or complaint, was alway’s impeccably dressed with a great pride in his appearance.
It is difficult to remember the passing of Jimmy without thinking about the well known Blackweir families who we were synonomous with the great communities of St Peters Parish, Members of the lifetime and loyal staff of Lysters of Pearse street, and the voluntary work for the Church and within the Parish. The Blackweirs were particularly known for maintaining, transporting and erecting the altars, statues, for the annual outdoor May Procession of St Peters and the Procession Mass on the Batteries over their working lives. It was a privilege for those of us who remember and lived among those communities during those difficult but wonderful times.
May Jimmy Rest in peace and remembering the deceased members of the Blackweir family at this time also.
