James and I were class mates in the King's Inns. It was an environment where people liked to talk. James had the rare quality of being as skilled at listening as he was at talking. James was very adept at making his point succinctly and articulately in any discussion but he always did so without putting anyone else down in any way. He was a gentleman to his finger tips and a credit to the family who reared him. I worked full-time during my time as a student in the King's Inns and so did not have the opportunity to get to know James, the most likeable of students as well as would I have liked. Yet, as the years rolled by it was always a pleasure to randomly bump into James on the street and observe that the years had not robbed him of his boyish looks or his endearing old- fashioned courtesy. I was so sorry to hear of his pre-mature death. James left this world far too young. My sincere sympathies to his parents and partner. I hope that in time they will derive some comfort from knowing that very positive memories of James endure among those of us fortunate to have encountered James on the path of life. May James rest in peace.
— Maura King
I was so saddened to hear of James' passing. I worked with James when I was an intern in the DFA over a decade ago. Even though I was the most junior in the department, James always treated me with respect and kindness. In the years that followed, we stayed in touch and he has been a wonderful and supportive mentor. He will be deeply missed. Comhbhrón ó chroí libh.
— Bríd Ní Ghráinne

To Freddie, the Kingston family, and friends I send heartfelt sympathies.

Through years of exceptional service, James shared his brilliance lightly together with his wit and sincere warm friendship. He lives on as an outstanding example of dedication and determination in public service. His principled practice and knowledge were beacons in guiding Ireland forward to a more tolerant state. James was a brave champion when most needed, and touched the hearts and minds of so many at the national and international level. At this time of deep sadness and loss, I wish James peace, and his family some comfort at the exceptional impact of his life.
— Cliona Manahan
Fondest memories of James and condolences to his family. N

James was our neighbour and a colleague from the Civil Service. We would meet at meetings, all formal, and then greet each other in clogs and shorts at home, us admiring his little garden that we loved. He was an exemplary human being, a very kind, humble person, who cared so much about his country with conviction and compassion. For us, James will be the man who saved Christmas. We will miss him. It is a huge loss for us, the society and Ireland. I hope you rest in piece with the angels.
Our deepest condolences to Freddie and James family.

James was always such a lovely presence with a great wit and brilliant insights. I didn't know James well, only really in passing, and I had not seen him in probably 20 years before I heard him call my name at Bucharest airport, a few years back. It was a fortuitous meeting. I was with a group and one of our colleagues was not allowed leave with us because he had contracted chickenpox. He was locked in a hotel alone, with little or no support. James, without hesitation, offered any help he could, through his contacts. I was so proud that I knew someone like him. I know, for so many people, he was always there to help, in so many situations. It's a lovely memory to have been in one of those situations. My deepest condolences to all who knew and loved James.

Over many years I was privileged to work closely with James on issues from the Nice Treaty to Brexit and always hugely admired his courage, erudition, incisive intellect and analytical clarity. Discussion of the most serious matters was enlivened by his sense of the ludicrous and his sparkling and sometimes cutting wit - always directed at the strong, never the weak. He was also immensely kind, modest and generous, above all to colleagues in difficulty. My deepest condolences to Freddie and his family.
— Rory Montgomery
As a legal intern in DFAT in 2013/2014, James was my first boss. He was fantastic.

When I first started working for him his sheer breadth of knowledge and brilliant intelligence was quite intimidating. I so desperately wanted to impress him. I don't know if I ever did, but what I do know is that over the course of that year I came to love working for him because of his kindness, sense of fun and the exciting unpredictability that came with wondering what might set him off that day! I have the fondest memories of attending COJUR with him in Brussels where we just laughed and laughed as he recounted tales of Irish and European political intrigue over dinner.

After leaving DFAT, James was kind enough to provide detailed references for me as I applied for other internships, scholarships and ultimately pupillage in London. We would occasionally meet up when I was home in Dublin for a catch up coffee. He was consistently a tonic. I so admired him and will miss him greatly. Sincere sympathies to his family on their loss.
— John Fitzsimons
