I haven’t met Jerry in 50 years, but was a classmate in CBC many moons ago.
When I think back to that time, Jerry looms large as a gentle and humorous classmate.

Hugely talented in Rugby and tennis, but to me a very decent and lovely human being.

As the train pulled gently out of Heuston station whether on the way to play UCC,Cork Con or Munster I was always in great form my usual entertaining, witty, but above all, modest self.

As the train rolled inexorably towards Kent station with the countryside skirting by trees bending in the wind and rain blowing horizontally across the window I would gaze out of said window at this bleak vista dreaming of scoring (yet another) great try sidestepping 14 players and dummying the last to touch down under the sticks.

Strangely, as the train drew into Kent station, the brakes squealing, slowly bringing the train to a shuddering halt, a ‘knot’ would form in my stomach. I would feel anxious and look pale.

I could never figure out why this always occurred on said trips to Cork then it dawned on me…

I was marking JERRY HOLLAND

a GREAT FELLA on and off the pitch.

Sincere Condolences to all the Holland family.

Gone but not forgotten..
— Brennie

A gent, a giant of a man, will be sorely missed but fondly remembered!
I had the great pleasure (and laugh) of playing tennis against Jerry this past summer. He was constantly asking to be taken out for a game. A challenge he really wanted to take on! It was decided that doubles would be the better option (more for me, than Jerry).
Rocking up to Douglas Tennis Club, looking out on court as Jerry warmed up, thinking this is going to be easy. Bearing in mind, Jerry hadn’t held a racket since the 80’s he also donned walking shoes, navy socks and a racket that belonged in a museum, I was thinking “easy money”!!!
How wrong I was!!!!
We were shown that day that serve and volley (80’s style) still has its place on court. A masterclass on how to get to the net, and just physically intimidate the opposition.
Walking to the net after losing I was not looking forward to the handshake. 2 reasons. One, Jerry’s shovel sized hand and two, his filthy black palm from a tennis grip which hadn’t seen the light of day since the 80’s.
Rest in Peace Jerry
— Brian Dorgan

I was immensely sad to hear of Jerry’s passing & offer my sincere sympathy to the extended Holland family. Jerry gave distinguished service to the game of rugby playing for Munster, Leinster & Ireland. He won cup medals with three different clubs Cork Constitution, UCC and, while based in Dublin, he won two Senior Cup & Senior League medals with Wanderers.

He formed a very successful alliance with Declan Kidney when, as manager & coach of Munster, they won two Heineken Cups. Most recently he had the great joy of seeing his son Billy capped Ireland.

Jerry will be greatly missed. May he Rest In Peace.
