My deepest sympathy on the sad death of Jerry, to his family and friends.
— Mary Connellan
Sincere condolences to The Kiernan Family and Ursula on the loss of your beloved Jerry. We will remember him fondly this weekend as the European Indoor Athletics Championships are held and imagine his wise words and astute observations, as our athletes perform. We'll recall how he imparted knowledge casually, the dramatic and the banal made all the more interesting by his unique style.

He has joined the faithful departed athletes and coaches. He too, has fought the good fight, run the race to the finish and continues to inspire from above.

May his gentle soul and the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.
— ABF
Sincerest sympathy and condolences to the Kiernan family. I was one of the fortunate to have Mr. Kiernan for two years in St. Brigid's, he was a superb teacher who went out of his way for his students. I have fond memories of Mr. Kiernan, from the extra summer tutorials he gave me in Irish to the school yard conker championships, his olympic reminisces and the treasured clonliffe harriers t shirts. I am privileged to have had him as a teacher. Rest in peace.

— Denise Irwin
My sincere sympathies to the Kiernan family, his friends and running community. I was very lucky to have had Jerry as a teacher in St. Brigid's. He gave his all to every student. He really got to know you and support you. He taught you about life, to enjoy school & learning and how to be the best you can be, preparing us 'nincompoops' for secondary school and life ahead...lessons that stay with me to this day.
I bumped into Jerry on Mart lane about 10 or so years later where I was met with a big smile and had a great catch up. He was quick with his wit and had me in stitches of laughter. It was a brief catchup but a great moment and one I will cherish forever. Thank you for everything Mr. Kiernan. It was an honour and a real privilege. A true legend! Rest in peace sir
— Karl Malone

He was a brilliant, smart, hilarious and kind man who I will miss very much.

The streets of Dublin 6 feel empty without the possibility of bumping into you!

Run free Jerry.

It is with the utmost affection and regard that I remember Jerry, my erstwhile colleague in St. Brigid's, where he quietly maintained a unique and magnetic presence for so many years. It felt like he had his own small republic there and all the children in particular wanted to be in it. They grew bananas, porridge, loaves of bread and great ideas. Once the door was shut, the classroom disappeared, the ceiling lifted, and they went wherever they wanted to go. His roots went down deep there and his branches grew high and wide; and the birds of the air came and sheltered in them, lived in them. and ate their fruit. They were all included. They could feel it, they knew it. He had both salt and sugar enough for all; salt for when a reality check was needed, sugar for when a stray needed some care. And he cared. His generosity counted no cost, never a thought for any cost. My own son was among the lucky boys who spent his sixth class with Jerry, and he would come home full of excitement, bursting with random anecdotes about the day, what Jerry said, a joke they'd had; happy, interested, delighted with everything, brimming over with affection, engagement and respect for this teacher. The cult of Jerry! a warm, compassionate, generous man, who left a giant footprint on life around him; who was loved, will be missed and who has left the world a lesser place without him. May he rest in peace.
— Teresa Moynihan
Deepest sympathies to his family and many friends on Jerry's untimely passing. I've many fond memories of Jerry as a teacher in St Brigids - and particularly his legendary skill at conkers. While he almost always took our chestnuts, he'd swap you encouragement, the beautiful teachings of life, not to mention an endless array of wonderful words. We always felt like we'd come out ahead in the trade. It's an honour to to have known such a decent man - Rest in Piece Jerry.

To Mr. Keirnan's family,

Jerry was my 6th class school teacher in the early 2000s. I remember that every pupil wanted Mr. Kiernan to be their 6th class teacher, and my class were lucky enough to get him. He was easily the most influential teacher I've had in my life, and I've been in third level education for 9 years.

I fondly remember him roaming the school yards in Autumn with his champion conker, regularly accepting the challenge from students brave enough to duel him, always drawing a large crowd!

He gave me a Clonliffe Harrier's t-shirt. Jerry used to run small in-class competitions and give out running t-shirts to help inspire students. I don't have it now, but I did run competitively in secondary school, most definitely from his influence.

Best memory of him I have is when he paused in the class and looked at me, and said, you know, Jack.. I had the very same hair as yours when I was a child. I remember people laughing, including myself. I don't have quite the mane Mr. Kiernan had, but still laugh at that comment and the kids trying to transplant Mr. Kiernan's hair from his head to mine to see what I'd look like in the future.

He is one of those people that leaves a genuine mark on your life, and it is amazing how much I remember of him, because I really looked up to him.

RIP Mr. Kiernan, you'll be fondly remembered by many.

Until we meet again.

Jerry- I will always think of you in that little corner of Ranelagh in Er Bruchetto, where you held court, shared wisdom and wine and warmed the room with your presence, even when the clouds were dark outside. I am grateful for your support even to the amateur runners like me and to have welcomed myself and Emily into those wonderful gatherings for Christmas and book launches. Gone too early, you are, and will be, greatly missed. Sincere condolences to your family and friends. Rest in Peace Jerry. Niall

— Mary Deignan
Sincere condolances to all the Kiernan family Listowel and Dublin and extended family on the huge loss
of Jerry an icon of Irish Atheltics and a huge talent who shared everything he had with all he knew and in later years was a fabulous commentator on national and international athletics who understood and knew his sport inside out. I recall my own personal memories of his name always been called out along the winning stetches of many a munster athletics final in Listowel and elsewhere and even then he showed huge promise under I think the tutilege of the great John Molyneax who was always very supportive of me as a female athlete. I left athletics for the field of pure mathematics and have been there since when it is equally hard to 'win' May his memory live long and may he rest in pleace.

— Kevin Donoghue
To the Kiernan Family,
We were so sorry to learn of the untimely passing of Jerry. We were very fortunate to have two of our three sons given the best schooling in St. Brigid's National School, Foxrock. In fact, one of our sons was taken under Jerry's wing for private Maths tuition on many a Saturday morning in Jerry's home with a few other pupils and Jerry, not only had a bowl of porridge ready for the boys, he gave them his best in every sense of the word and never took a penny for for his endeavours. That was the measure of the man. A most decent human being.
We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the Kiernan family on Jerry's passing. May he rest in peace.
— Brendan & Lorraine Malone

Our club is very saddened of the recent passion of Jerry Kiernan. An Irish athlete of world class standard, Jerry often supported and won many races held in Cork throughout his running career. We pay tribute to Jerry's achievements on the track and for all he gave in his life to people through his teaching and coaching. His punditry on RTE which was second to none. We pass on our sincere condolences to Jerry's family, friends and all of those who knew him. His memory will continue to inspire our club and its members. May he rest in peace.

My sincere condolences to Jerry's family, I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. It was a pleasure to have spent time in his company and to receive such guidance from one of Ireland’s greatest athletes. I think fondly of the Saturday morning sessions/time trials up Kilmashogue, and of Jerrys encouragement and great humour “that I would go better if I just shaved a few pounds off my fat arse” Such a great mentor to many and I am so thankful of everything, you will be sorely missed by all.
May you rest in peace Jerry Kiernan
