To all the Fitzgerald family, I only recently heard of the sad death of your mother Joan and I’m sorry I didn’t get to the funeral. My memories of your mother are so positive. I remember in 1983 sharing a rented house with Jim in Stillorgan and it’s no lie to say that one of the highlights of my time there was the tornado of positive energy that was Joan Fitzgerald descending without warning (Met. Éireann was in its infancy and in fairness the ‘Joan tracker’ had not yet been invented.) In she would come, laden down with 4 tonnes of her culinary specialty – biscuit cake. Where she managed to source so many Marietta biscuits, butter and chocolate was a mystery to us, but one that didn’t perturb us much as we scoffed as much of Jim’s main food source for the next month as we could, (before he came back from rowing to give us a clatter….) And the same in Thurles - a warm welcome, a smile, and - biscuit cake. Heaven! Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam agus anam Phat. Kieran Moore.
