I am so sorry not to have been present at Joe's funeral not having been aware of his passing until too late in the day. There was something of the unostentatious Renaissance Man in Joe which showed in his committed participation in the active retirement programme at Dalkey. Two fields in particular attracted our mutual interest: dimensions of Irish and the poetry of contemporary Ireland. As our homes lie in the same direction we would amble homewards afterwards ag caint is ag comhrá faoi imeachtaí an lae sa bhaile agus i gcéin.
My deepest sympathy to Kathleen and to Joe's daughters all of whom must be sorely grieving at his departure and I hope they find some consolation in the assurance that we can say of Joe gurbh duine é siúd atá imithe gan amhras ar shlí na fírinne.
— Kevin Hurley, Dalkey
