It's two months since he left us but this time of year is always synonymous with Joe. Returning from abroad as was often the case for Christmas at home, my reconnection with Ireland complete after meeting Joe and hearing all his observations on what had unfolded here since we'd last met. Christmas a year ago stands out too: little were we to know it would be the last time we'd meet out and about, sharing drinks and wonderful food with great company including Joe's lifelong friends Gerry and Niall. But every week seems to bring an anniversary: I still reach for the phone to text him - the Dubs winning six-in-a-row, Limerick's hurling victory, Ireland's World Cup group draw or to ask his thoughts on some political event or news story or documentary. Or just to send on the mobile a joke or photo or snapshot of life, the gift so cruelly taken from one who gave so much to so many in his own. It still seems so unreal that a wonderful friend who was so close to us for so long is no longer here - but his spirit burns brightly from all he gave us and how he showed us to live life. I can still hear his laugh with his wry but gentle wit with smiling eyes - we were so lucky to know him and have him in our lives, a brotherly bond that will stay with me for life. Thinking of Áine and Tom, and Eilís and Deirdre and all Joe's relations and many great friends. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.

When you're young and the future is somewhere out there beyond Synge Street, friends are everything. Losing touch into adulthood doesn't alter the importance of those formative years. Resuming contact with Joey recently only confirmed the fact. We virtually picked up where we left off, coming out of Mr Sweeney's English class. Joey was as perceptive, curious, informed and as thoroughly decent as ever. A great dad too by the sound of it. All we can offer to Aine, Tom, Eilish, Deirdre and family is the fervent hope that whoever took him so young has the good grace to bestow you all with strength and resolve in this awful phase of your lives..
Warmest regards, Tony and Deirdre Leen.
— Tony Leen

As an Engineer he contributed greatly and was always generous in his willingness to share his knowledge with others , especially with younger Engineers. His knowledge of sport and in particular soccer was extensive and his ability as a player was exceptional. I’ll miss Joe as will many others and my deepest sympathy goes to Áine, Tom and his family in this time of great loss.

Sincere condolences to you Áine, Tom, Deirdre and the Nolan family. My first project in ESB was with Joe in 2016. We had to repair some steel stacks at Poolbeg power station and we were both constantly worried about the wind and gales down there! Those stacks are visible from most places around Dublin bay and will always be a nice reminder of good times spent learning the ropes and working alongside him. He was a perfect gentleman and will be missed by all. May he rest in peace.
