I am so sorry to hear of John leaving us. A true gentleman and leader. My sympathy to Susan, Conor, Paula and Julie-Ann.
I spent a lot of happy times with Jon through Tidy Towns and community meetings over the last few years. He was such a positive character. He would say 'Society fails when the lowest common denominator wins' and this is a saying I have carried to many meetings and aspects of my life.
I remember writing a letter to National Tidy Towns saying John was a leader to all young men. I was delighted he won a national recognition award that year.
John had great pride in Ashbourne as he was also my hurling manager. He had great taste in how to enhance the community. I always enjoyed having his guidance and approach to situations. He was fond of a good chat also.
I will miss him and his big smile.
This is a sad time as a real leader has departed.
Rest in Peace John and I am thinking of the Fanning family.
Best wishes, Sean Smith
