Dear Betty,

I am thinking of you and your large family at this difficult time and obviously, during the funeral, You have lost someone who was very deeply loved by very many people and respected by those of us, like me, who didn't know him really well.

Love, Rosalind
— Rosalind Eden
Sad that I could not be with you as you celebrate John's wonderful life. John had great impact on my life and was a father figure. I remember fondly that he would always share a kind or witty remark when you talked with him and especially his trademark chuckle as he delivered his one-liners.
One of my best childhood memories was the sight of John walking down the steps of Clogher National School as he and Betty came to take us out of school and off to Banna Strand with Niamh as a baby. I lived with John & Betty in my first year at UCD and they made me so welcome. When I moved out for my later college years, there was always the standing invite to come for Sunday dinner and enjoy Betty's wonderful roast dinners. My overriding impression of John was of how good a father he was and how family was everything to him. Another early vivid memory was going to hear the bells on New Year's eve in the Liberties and John chasing someone with his Morris Minor car who had flipped him off until Betty reminded him there was children in the car and to calm down.
