I got to know John all too briefly. He immediately struck me as an immense character not just physique but persona. John had an aura about him. His spirit would pull you in and you knew you were in the better of the meeting. We’ll be forever grateful to have known John and his impact on such a small club. The man that shook the valley with the best Haka ever! Slán John and rest easy.

I had the pleasure of working closely with John when I worked in Canada, me and the lads remember him as a proper character, strong as an Ox and an all round generous, nice bloke, I've not spoken to him since 2001, but still remember him fondly and chat about him with my mate often. Rip John Nikora, legend.

Jonny was a good friend and supportive person - in good times and bad. Always there for you if you needed him. Big smile, gentle soul, tough as nails on a goal line stand. Lucky to have known him. RIP Jonny.

My condolences to John’s friends and family. I had the great honour of being coached by John when I played for the ICRC in Toronto. He will be missed by many. Rest In Peace John. Until we meet again.

I first met John when I joined the ICRC in 1999. He was the first person to approach me and made me feel welcome. Not long after he became a good friend and someone you could always rely on. A huge loss that cannot be summed up in a few words. Rest well my friend you will be sorely missed.

Big Jonny was one of a kind. His charm, generosity, and smile will be missed by all those he touched — from Canada and Ireland to New Zealand. RIP Jonny!

All the best bro on your final journey. We had some laughs and played some great rugby as young blokes. Drank way too much and told a story or two. You will be sadly missed by the whole Costar whanau. Arohanui bro.

Johnny was a legend around the rugby circuit in Toronto; strong as an ox and gentle as a kitten. He was a guy that always had a smile on his face, or a frown trying to show how tough he was, before he broke into a giggle. He was a friend to all and a mentor to many. He will be missed by his rugby family here in Canada. We love you Johnny.

My condolences to the entire family and friends of this beautiful man!!! I met Jon in 1998 when I joined the Irish in Toronto. He was tough, strong, and pushed his teammates and players to the max. But when he was off the field, he was a gentle giant with the biggest smile and heart which gravitated everyone around him. Rest In Peace my friend until we meet again.
