We knew John from the village having a pint over the years and he was such a gentleman and interesting person. John was in my class in Scoil Treasa Naofa, Donore Avenue, in ancient times. I met him many times when he worked in the Irish Press. He was larger than life, a gifted journalist who retained his integrity in difficult times.

As a copyboy doing the Sunday Press night shift in the 70s-80s John would talk to me constantly about the place I hailed from: Ballinascorney/Glenasmole in the Dublin mountains. He loved the lakes, hills, fields and streams of that hidden corner of the world. I can see him now today already walking up by Allagour. Enjoy the walk, John!

As a young child I recall meeting John in Carlow town, shortly after he had commenced his career, aged about 20, with The Nationalist & Leinster Times. My late father, Tim Moore, was News Editor there at the time and I once heard him say that he never had to make a suggestion to John concerning his work, such was the young man's breadth of knowledge and skill. A gifted journalist and author, who had an obvious flair for writing. RIP.
