Was really sad to hear about the passing of Mr McSweeney. He was without doubt the best teacher I ever had. He treated every student equally regardless of ability. He gave up his lunch times to hold classes in the chemistry prefab for any student who needed extra help.
Deepest sympathies to his family.
— Past pupil
Sincere sympathy to the Mac Sweeney family on the sad passing of John.
John was an excellent Maths and Chemistry teacher. I will always remember him with a blue ring binder folder open and balanced in one hand and a stick of chalk in the other hand ready to go the minute he arrived in to the classroom.
May he rest in peace.
— Aidan Mahony, Laxie-Rathcoole

It was a privilege to have been one of his students in the 90’s.

He was revered in the school for his ability and dedication. He had a calm authority and I don’t recall him ever raising his voice. I think every student knew how lucky we were to have such a great teacher in our small part of the world.

Just as an example - when we were in our Leaving Cert year, Mr. MacSweeney stayed back late every Friday for an extra revision class. He did not rush or watch the clock and we had the privilege of seeing a master in action. He had to be convinced to accept a token thank you gift at the end of the year.

He could have taught at any level of education and he did not ignore those who needed more help than others.

Sincere sympathies to his family.
— Past pupil

You were a big part of my life growing up.
Fun times down in the farm in Rathcoole, planting all your vegetables and giving me drives in your blue tractor.
Great memories from our days in the bog saving the turf
The many Saturday nights we spent at your place watching Match of the Day eating all your sweets.
You were always one of my first calls when I came home from my travels and our conversations could last for hours.
There are many words to describe you - kind, humble, intelligent, hard working, funny to name a few.
You will be missed.
Rest in peace Uncle Johnny.
— Godson Kevin

Deepest condolences to John’s extended family on your sad loss.
John was my maths and chemistry teacher in the 90s and was a brilliant teacher.
He always managed to get full respect from the class without having to raise his voice, even from the messers.
Whenever we had a maths or chemistry test he always had it corrected by the next day, unlike some teachers who took weeks, not mentioning any names!
There was a maths camp in UCC one Saturday for leaving cert students, all our class went, John had organised the bus and the tickets and when we went to pay him, he wouldn't take a penny off us.
One of my family came out of the Leaving Cert maths exam in a bit of a panic, there was one question they couldn't get at all, they showed it to John and after a few seconds he goes "But sure that was easy"!
Back before Lansdowne Rd had floodlights, Ireland games were on during the day and I'd often sneak a radio and earphones in to class to listen to it. I thought I had gotten away with it, until I'd be leaving the class after, when he'd ask me quietly what the score was - he obviously had known all along!
May you rest in peace John.
— Brendan O'Mahony
Sincere sympathy to Sheila, Laurence ,Tony and the extended MacSweeney family. May John rest in peace.
— Margaret Leader, Cloghoula, Millstreet
The best way to sum him up as a teacher was that the never had to raise a voice to anyone as he was held in the highest esteem and reverence. Even the trouble makers respected him!

He was known as the best teacher in Ireland and we knew he was special. Truly unique. Also very funny and witty and kind and patient.

Made a positive impact and impression on 1000s of people in his lifetime. Inspired many people towards teaching and science.
Lifted all our grades up through his dedication.
— Past pupil

Very saddened to learn of Mr MacSweeney's passing. He was one of my favourite teachers in Rathmore Secondary school. He was deeply respectful of all students and went above and beyond to support our learning. He brought a dry wit and expert knowledge to Chemistry and Maths classrooms and made these difficult subjects seem within our reach as students. I remember going with Mac to attend a Leaving Cert Maths weekend at UCC and it was lovely to see him outside the school environment; his interest in how the topic was being taught and how we were responding to it. Mac was absolutely a treasure in Rathmore secondary school and his kindness, wisdom and integrity created a safe and inspiring space for all his students. My deepest condolences to his family and friends and know that he was held in the highest of esteem by his students.
