What a wonderful person and what a contribution he made to the health and happiness of everyone he came in contact with. His ability to make us all feel better and guide all us lesser mortals to achieve great things will never be forgotten. John was a ‘once-off’ who leaves a void in our lives which won’t be easily filled. But what a loss he must be to Gerardine, Gráinne, Niamh, Rhona, Deirdre and Cliodhna, to Dan and Stephen, and all the grandchildren and all his family and friends to whom I offer my deepest sympathy.Go raibh leaba aige i measc na n-aingeal, slán leat a sheanchara, Malachy O’Rourke, Brussels

To Gerardine and your daughters and to John's extended family, I would like to belatedly extend my sincere condolences.
There have been many deserved tributes to John since his untimely death but I would like to add that our family will never forget his role during the first pandemic lockdown when he delivered groceries and the daily paper to our late mother every morning - usually before 8am.
He has been justifiably recognised for his regional and national contributions but he also made an enormous contribution to his local community in Ballagh.
RIP John.

Sincere condolences to Gerardine, Gráinne, Niamh, Rhona, Deirdre and Cliodhna on the death of John.
I first met John in 1998 when he and Pat Egan asked us to organise the return train trip to Athlone with the Sam Maguire Cup. This led to many other trips in the coming years and many happy memories.
My memories of John are of a kind and gentle person with a huge attention to detail. This attention to detail extended to regular calls from Gerardine in advance of trips to advise on the catering needs of the team.
John, you will be missed by all who knew you but especially by your family.
Always a delight to meet John.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis.
— Myles McHugh, Oranmore
My deepest sympathy to Geraldine, Gráinne, Niamh, Rhona, Deirdre and Cliodhna, all the extended O'Mahony and Towey families on the very sad passing of John. I have very fond memories of Johno in St. Nathy's College during the 80's. Geography turned out to be the subject I got best results in & we know why. I was so happy for him winning his first All-Ireland title with Galway knowing winning was Johno only way and what the GAA meant to him. His Gaa career was tremendously great as in politics too.He was ALL IN no matter what subject, project, team, career he was involved in as a result got the highest rewards and achievements. It was all about the people for Johno. I remember him fondly taking me aside once to remind me of the future path ahead and what I need to brush up on. His advice unfortunately I didn't all take on board but I greatly appreciated Johno taking the interest in my wellbeing as he did for hundreds & hundreds of people and the rest.
Johno, thank you so very much for all the happiness you brought to SO MANY PEOPLE over your lifetime👏.

RIP John
— Gary Noone

On behalf of the entire Gaelic Games family in Europe, our deepest sympathies to the extended O'Mahony family on the sad passing of John. A true legend of our games.
— John Murphy, Chairperson. Gaelic Games Europe
Reading of what can only be described as a true colossus makes one appreciate what they have - to want what we have as opposed to having everything we want. Strangely, or maybe not to those who knew John personally, but did this sum up what he stood for, at the end of the day?

Though prominent in the GAA and indeed as a public representative, he came across as being quiet and I always found that interesting about him - you only heard his voice when something meaningful had to be said.

Sympathy to his wife and girls, and to his extended family.
RIP John, you did the heavy lifting, lifted others, quietly!
— Brendan Hegarty, GAA Supporter

As we light a candle, we pray for Johno and watch the flickering flame guide him to his eternal reward among the Angels in Heaven.
Tears sting our eyes.
Pride tingles in our hearts
Memories make us smile.
Days of glory and heart thumping.
Johno was a hero to so many people.
We were proud to be part of a team led by Johno, not on the football field, in the political field.
Canvassing for such a great person was easy.
He was a just man, striving for a just society, for everyone.

To you Ger and his beloved girls and extended family we offer our sincere condolences on Johno's death.
May the knowledge that so many people are keeping you in prayers and positive thoughts at this difficult time of parting and separation be of some consolation, as you carry on through life without Johno by your sides.
He is of course watching over you with all the love and expert eyes of the man he was.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
